Played in an open event at our club on Saturday.

4BBB 3/4 Stableford.

The club captain is tees off behind so after my appalling round I hang back and ask the Captain how he go on,

"43 points." was his reply

"That's got a good chance of winning." I said

"Not a chance. The other group out with us had 47 points!!!!"

Some lad from who has transferred from Lancaster and plays off 15 cleared up.

On a 490 yard par 5, he hit driver, wedge to the back of the green.

It's a shame, he played with the Captain as I'm sure he'll be getting cut severly, when the handicaps come up for review.

Loving the sour grapes!

How on earth could you possibly know that he is a 'bandit'?

Could have played the round of his life or it might have been a while since he last handed in a card.

To deduce anything otherwise pangs of annoyance that a new member won.

As for distance off the tee.... the longest hitter I've ever played off is constantly spoken to at our range about how well he hits the ball. He plays off 19.5 and I can confirm that he needs every stroke that his handicap allows him, particularly from 50 yards out.

Handicapping is done by computer these days, so there is little chance of a "severe cut" is was the case in the old days under Rule 19

Noticed some scores like that in our club champs qualifying on Sunday a guy of 18 shot 79 nett 61 and he had a triple bogey 7, guy said he played out his skin and had a few lucky bounces fair play to him.

47 in 4BBB isnt that bad really, its a great score but not that unusual.
That's true all depends on how the course is playing that day. We played in a pairs event off 3/4 a couple of weeks ago played really well had 42 and thought that wont get a thing and ended up second as 43 won it. We thought 46 or 47 as someone always has a day to remember.

I love how everyone who puts in a good score is automatically a bandit.

We had a 4BBB stableford at the weekend, and it was off 3/4. A couple of guys I know came in with 46 points. Both of them play off 7...they just had a good day at the office that day!!

Likewise.

Egad. Agreeing with one of the Scottish contingent twice in a day! I must be ill!

Mind you, they re pretty good at rguing amongst themselves (there's a long history of that too! :D).

I noticed the results on the club website for a men's comp over the weekend..... some guy off 20 managed a net 56!

Junior?

I've certainly seen some phenomenal advances and consequential scores by some!

Pretty naive to assume that because the guy hits it a mile he should be a low handicapper, golf doesn't work like that.

One way to not get riled about these things is to enter scratch comps only, level playing field for everyone then!

just a different 'playing field' surely? Couple of +5's decide to unexpectedly play and a field of Scr and 1's view the issue in a very similar light :)

personally I remain of the view that as long as it's a Q comp it's a case of 'well done', if it's a NQ event (such as this format or 3/4 allowance etc) then I must be there for fun - so it's also a case of 'well done'.....:(

Well of course it depends on who else is playing, but the best golfer wins at the end of the day.

I enjoy competitions but don't take them too seriously as you can't legislate for a high handicapper having the round of their life. Just a bit of fun, nothing to get wound up about.
