I was not such a serious player when I bought a set of mid price irons from American Golf a couple of years ago. Although I bought them from AG the brand rep was on hand to measure me prior to placing my order. It was my first "custom fitting" so I had no real expectations. The rep asked me a few questions and watched me hit a few shots on a lunch monitor. He then gave me my "specs" to place my order. Two years later I decided it was time to treat myself to some Titleists. I booked into HB Golf academy and the findings were very interesting. My swing has imroved but not changed that much in two years. My old clubs where 1" shorter, adjusted 2 degrees flatter and regular flex (standard for my height). My new AP1 716's will be standard length, 2 degrees upright and X-flex. 4 degrees and two shaft stiffnesses out! Has anyone else ever had a similar experience?

The first new set of clubs I bought were Wilson Staff Di11's. I went to American Golf and asked about fitting.

The guy let me hit a few balls and basically said for the clubs to fit my SWING I'd need the lie at -2deg or something. However, that was not what he wanted to do, as it would be better to fix my swing and fit for my height... which were standard length and lie.

I was glad of him to show me what difference basically standing up to the ball would have. So although you think your swing has not changed much, it might actually be that you've adjusted your body enough to warrant a change like you see.

After a good few years and some lessons, I'm still standard length and lie, just a stiff shaft.

Have gone up 4 degrees between sets of clubs (2* flat to 2* upright) - but that was due to dramatic swing changes.
Am having a fitting with the Titleist rep' at my club on Friday and will be interested to see if there is a change in lie angle again, as I've changed my swing quite a bit this last couple of years, due to lessons.

Have only had stiff shafts to date. But predict X for the next set (based on a couple of demo days this season).

There's no standard, so 2 degrees flat in your old irons isn't necessarily 4 degrees different from 2 degrees upright in your new irons.

Other things can make a difference, how the strike was measured, eg off a board or just club face tape, shoes you're wearing, etc etc.

I have been fit on two occassions in the last fortnight for 716 AP2's with different results.

Totally Golf fit me into 2 degrees up and 1/2 inch longer based on static measurements and hitting on a lie board.

I was then fit yesterday by Titleist 2 degrees "flat" standard length shaft, no lie board was used just GC2 and adjusting the club head based on shot grouping and launch.

It’s hard to determine what is the right fit when they both could have been the appropriate fit for me on the day with my amateur swing.
