Following on from the D-Day thread, I would be interested to hear from any reservists across the Armed Forces. I would like to hear the experiences of those already enlisted as to how they have managed to balance full-time work commitments with their Reservist commitment and more generally how people have found the experience. Conscious of PERSEC and discretion generally, I would welcome a PM from any such forumite.

Sorry to put this but with limited knowledge of yourself and no explanation of why you'd like this information I would caution anyone considering answering you and sending a pm.

If you read the D-day thread it seems a moderator suggested he do it. The same question seems to be in both posts.

I served in the Severn Division RNR for 25 years and it was a great experience. It's always difficult balancing this with your home and work life but not impossible.

I was in the TA from 1986 to 1995 while working for Barclays, my annual commitment was only 18 days (a fortnight and 1 long weekend) Fortunately the Bank gave me 10 working days a year to volunteer, so I only had to take 2 days as holiday and 4 weekends. Might be worth asking your employer if they will support you.

My base (Winchester) was about 60 miles from home , but most of the 2 weekers were abroad, BAOR, Cyprus, Hong Kong.

I joined before I met my wife, so she was aware of the time I was spending away,
The extra pay and annual Training Bounty were attractive, but to be honest, i'd have done it for free, some great experiences, seen some amazing things and met some brilliant people

Im now a Scout Leader so passing on some of the skills to the younger generation.:)

Well done for volunteering, more people should do it

Thanks to all above for your comments.

SocketRocket and PhilTheFragger, if I may I will follow up with both of you via PM asking for some insight.

Phil, I agree. And the convoluted recruitment process is a wonderful mechanism for testing commitment. I started this ball rolling 13 months ago last week and my induction beckons this week with AIB in the first week of September. Very, very exciting times indeed.

So what are you hoping for from the AIB, do you have a clear line on what you want or who you want join or be a part of?

Ultimately, a pass. :)

My application was for the Logistics branch although I have been asked by the Sherwood CO and a couple of others to consider, having regard to my background, Information Ops. It is a more difficult specialism to find detail on however the CO has told me to use the next 3 months of training to ascertain where my interest lies. In the RNR a decision need not be made until post-AIB but always good to have a goal.

May I ask how old you are?

Is this totally from being/still a civvie to reservist or do you have any military background, however short?
