Are prices getting out of hand?

I don't know if anyone could warrant £470 for a new driver (I also assume that is with stock shafts) so if you were looking for custom you would be looking at over £500 for a 1 stick! Irons used to be the most expensive purchase!

Theres been a bit of a shift in model, whereas before you used to be able to get 2 or 3 stock shafts and everything else was a big upcharge its almost as if they are all charged at the upcharge price, think the new TMs have 30+ shafts you can have at no upcost. Its actually the guy buying the stock off the shelf whos getting the big cost increase not the one wanting the different shafts (bar a few exotics which as you say can take it into Alex1975s price range ;) )

And no I wont be paying 400+ for a driver that may add a few yards

£429 for the new TaylorMade M1 and £469 for the new Callaway GBB Epic (AG online prices this morning).

Ouch...

Presumably the usual suspects have been barred from mentioning the price in the reviews in the same email where they were told the embargo date. Suspiciously absent from discussion across the board.

Golf geeks - like geeks of any technology - are innocent mugs for new stuff - the promise of something new, different - perhaps even a little better - have to have. :)

Duno what your on about, my driver did not cost anything like £500.... ;)

The trouble is when we want to be fitted you only get the new offerings for that so would need to pay the £400+ price... it seems nobody will fit you for last years (and pretty much same performing) Clubs.

I really want to get fitted for a new driver- or perhaps a new shaft for my current driver but there is nowhere I can get this done close to me it seems. But if it were to be a new driver I am unwilling to fork out £400+ for one.

Not sure if its the same in Glasgow, but most local golf clubs to me would be able to put you on a trackman to buy a shaft. They may have to get it sent in.

Has anyone seen any reviews of the GBB epic? Im not one to spend 400+ but the rumours of it had me curious enough to wait to see if all the fuss was worth it.

Well I have lessons off of a local pro and he didn't have a lot of shaft options(nor could he sell me one on it's own) but said wait until the new drivers out so again back to same conundrum.

My own club don't have any LM facility- the 2 main suppliers (Callaway or Titleist) you're having to travel to gleneagles or st andrews which is a fair drive. which is another problem as a lot of places have maybe 2 or max 3 suppliers rather than all.

Would love a golf principles type place up here.

Have a play about, read some reviews get a general understanding and pick up a shaft second hand! Easy to pick up shafts on the bay with a Titleist adaptor, just watch out for the fakes!

Have you also seen some of the price slashing for models that have been out for barely 12 months? Soon the market will go pop! I noticed that Second hand scotty's are SO expensive now. Used to be able to pick up a Circa 62 for 80 quid! Joke!

It's a Driver that goes the same distance as .....well, the other drivers. ;)

The price of these new clubs is ludicrous but while the big names think they will sell sufficient units to make a profit and offset all the R&D and production costs they'll continue to do so. It has to end somewhere but I don't think it's reached the tipping point yet and while there is more and more technology being added they find a way to spin longer distance as being sacrosanct especially if they also continue to add more and more different shafts as "standard". As a side not who the heck though up "Jailbreak Technology" in the new epic. How tacky does that sound?

It's all got me a bit baffled. Not so long ago TM were pushing their 'Speed Pocket', allowing the face to flex for greater distance. Now Callaway are stiffening the face up to take the flex out for...well, greater distance. C'mon guys, which is it?

You need next years model, with a speed pocket, and jail break.

What happened to "loft up" as well? These all seem to be going back down to old school 10-10.5 (or lower) lofts. One day I'd love to see a big manufacturer come out and say this driver won't give you an extra ten yards but we've made it more forgiving and will tighten dispersion by an average of 6-10 yards. It'll never happen as distance is king

'Loft Up' was I think championed by TM with the SLDR which was a weight forward, low spin concept, allowing more loft for the same distance as a higher spinning model. The theory being more loft helps us mere mortals keep it straighter. The downside was the mis hits didn't go anywhere.
