A buddy of mine is developing an App to manage scores, prizes, handicaps, results for informal Swindles, Roll-Ups etc. It has come out his his frustration with our Seniors doing much on sheets of paper! :-)

He's shown me the prototype and it looks impressive. I said I would ask for the thoughts of this illustrious group to help him develop it further.

Three questions:

1) Does anyone currently use an App of this type, are you aware of any?
2) What functionality would you expect? In addition to that stated above
3) How much would you pay for such an App? Would you pay for such an App?

Thoughts appreciated...

1. Nope and not aware of any apps

And don’t think many will pay

Both our swindles are done via a spreadsheet

Issue with an ap is many swindles use various different methods for

Handicaps
Winnings
OOM

Etc

Going to be very hard to encompass all

Is that only singles play? Does it cater for pairs, triples, quads or possibly teams not playing together?
All sorts of different team events, something like 37. Includes Ryder Cup and LIV, see their website page or download the app and have a play.

A couple of our fossils run the swindles at ours and just use a paper notebook.
If it was me I'd just use Google Sheets. It's free and anyone with shared access could update it on any phone or computer.

I wouldn't pay for an app, personally. It would just be a tool for editing a database and would probably be less "clean" and customisable than just using sheets.

LOL. I remember developing a spreadsheet in Lotus 123 to do the scoring and winner(s) selection in our three day tournament - 3 days, 180 players, 4 flights, gross and net prizes in each flight, included enough info for retrogression and it would print out the results.
This was 40 years ago!

There are loads of existing apps/software packages around aimed at societies: HandicapMaster, Squabbit, Golf GameBook, VPAR, MySociety, Your Golf Society, Golfshake, ParUp, RiddyGolf, etc. There are also the big ISV packages that clubs use, but they would be cost prohibitive for smaller casual groups.

I used Golfshake many years ago; more recently I've used HM and looked at several others. Functionality varies, as does cost. As with the big ISVs, it's rare that one will do everything you want or do things as well as you'd like, or they could/should (often through bad practice early in the design process that limits what can be done later), so there's always a trade off.

We use Squabbit.

Can't really say what its full functionality is as I don't manage it. But I know it does weekly singles play, at the same time as doing a 2 from 3 team score. Also once did a Cha Cha Cha instead of the 2 from 3. Also does a season long league. But I know there's loads more in it.

The main downside is that it can't (ie is not allowed by England Golf) to read a players official H/I from the WHS database - so has to really on players adjusting their handicap manually as needed.
