Anyone over 50 had lessons and actually improved?

Just wondering if there is a ceiling as to how good you can get. I realise you will get to a certain level and that will be it, but is there an age limit whereby no matter how many lessons you have you can't seem to translate this to the course?

I've had quite a few lessons but I seem to have gone backwards, sort of resigned to never getting any better. Just cannot find any consistency and continual 4 or 5 'blow up' holes in every round.

I don’t believe it’s an age limit for a ceiling to how good someone can be

But I’m very much in the belief that it’s someone’s natural ability that will give you the ceiling

There will be a limit we can all reach

I have had a few pro's over the years some gave basic advice as that was all I was after. In the past 12 months i went to a local pro and felt it was a complete waste of time. I was being charged £100 to hit balls over and over with not getting any feedback of advice to what I should do.

Now I have moved to a different coach and straight away there have been things we are addressing. The golf is getting better, Handicap coming down. Further things to sort.

I think it's all about finding the right pro for you. Get someone who teaches you how you feel you need to be taught.

Are you two related by the way? Bradley and Arthur Wedge? The Wedge bros? 😄

If you're having 4 or 5 blow up holes maybe a playing lesson would be helpful.
Learning how to plot your way around the course, when to play safe and when to be adventurous, just understanding how to score and, more importantly, how to limit the damage when things go wrong.

Good point. No I don't have any set drills, he talks me through a fix and I try to harness that in my range practice etc.. I have thought about a second opinion and trying someone else
Can you, hand on heart, say you are properly practising what you have been told? It takes a long time, and a lot of shots to make some changes so it might be a lack of practice that could be causing the issue.

Yes, agree there and he has been out with me for 9 holes previously, but we have discussed doing it again.

I guess the next question is, what are you wanting out of your lesson and out of golf? I've had lessons and from those lessons I've hit the ball better. Not necessarily further but certainly cleaner. That does not necessarily translate to better scores but it makes the experience of the round happier. That will do for me. I'd like to shoot lower but I know that to do that I need to practice more, short game in particular, and at the moment I don't do that.

So, in answer to your question. I am over 50, have had lessons, improved because of them. Not scored lower but that is on me.

I suspect everyone has a bit of a ceiling and as you age the ceiling gets a bit lower . However that does not mean you cannot improve at virtually any age.I suspect few casual golfers are anywhere near their ceiling. The work you may have to do to get towards it will vary. For what its worth my handicap has come down around 5 shots over the past three years with a combination of lessons , practice & possibly club fit. Not much this year though I feel I am playing a bit better recently and hope to get it down a bit more next year. I'm over 60.

I play twice a week and if I'm not playing I'm on the range once or twice a week. I know what it is I have to work on, I have made notes in my phone after my lessons so I can remember what I have been told, but its when I'm playing I just don't seem to apply them (unless its something different). Its great when he's stood behind me in lessons, I hit them great. He shows me what I'm doing wrong, but maybe I'm thinking about it too much?

Its all about lowering my handicap for me, started out last season around 15, got down to 12 then back up to 15 at end of season. Thats whats bugging me.

A friend of mine is mid to late-50s.
His HI was 16ish for a few years, most scores being 85-100ish. Pretty much where I am now.
He had lessons this year and his HI has been steadily around 10 since, with his rounds being consistently in the low 80s and only rarely touching 90. His driving and ball striking with irons has improved massively. Blow up holes are now rare for him; it's all pars and bogeys.
I feel I've hit my ceiling but it's made me rethink what I could do over the next year or two.

Yes, Aimpoint at Woburn. Shaved 2/3 shots off my handicap within 6 months. Putting & chipping don't require too much physical energy. Certainly worth a go. That & yoga/bodybalance/pilates...

Probably depends if your issues are easy to fix or not. Someone who's never had a lesson and has a proper ropey swing might see loads of benefits from having one. I'm not 50, but I had a lesson back in January, played awful for months and have only barely reached the level I was at last year. I feel like my swing looks better now, striking maybe marginally improved on irons and woods, but developed an almighty slice with driver, short game still hit and miss, so my scores have gone up instead of down. Thus so has my handicap. Maybe my ceiling for improvement was already pretty low - or maybe I just didn't get it and have persevered with doing all the wrong things.

I guess what I'm saying is, everyone will have a glass ceiling for improvement - but you don't know where that is until you try. :ROFLMAO:

Get him to caddy for you, then he can be standing behind you out on the course.
