Adjusting Handicaps

Hello, we have started an unofficial society with work colleagues and are sorting out the handicaps. Unfortunately the 28 cap gets in the way of us evening out the players at the moment (who knows maybe we'll get better....) so we cant use any of the standard tools to calculate and adjust the handicap....

I had done bit of research on how to calculate the initial handicap...ie calculate their adjusted score as score (capped at +2 each hole) less the SSS....averaged over 3 rounds.

The problem then came when attempting to adjust these with so many >28 handicappers.

for example, we have a guy playing off 31. He played last week and his adjusted score was 29. lot of holes getting capped at +2 but a few more bogeys than normal. In this case it seems that his handicap should be reduced by 1 stroke (2x0.5).

However, he only scored 30 points off the 31 hanidcap which would imply that his handicap should increase by 0.1???

Any idea what should happen in this case???

Thanks

J

If 28 doesn't cover it then use something like HandicapMaster Society edition and set all the players up as women :D :D

Seriously, this will give you up to 36 handicap. Work the intial ones out by netting down to triple not double bogeys and away you go. If 36 isn't enough, or at least a target for quick improvement then I'd seriously consider not allowing them to play.

Great sounds like an idea. Plus setting them as women will help with the 19th hole banter lol...

So when adjusting would that use the adjusted score or comparison to 36 points??

Thanks

The few societies I play with tend to adjust handicaps (of players that aren't in a club) just by using the SSS of the tee used.
You don't need anything clever to work them out, it's either +0.1 or reduce as normal. I personally wouldn't bother getting in the "nett/gross" double thing. Can't see the point.
