A Sudden Death in the Family

Sorry for your loss(es) SILH and tyke.

We had to take 'our little boy' to the vet last week for the fatal jab, I feel like his eyes were begging us to take him, he just couldn't say it.

I consider it just like Dignitas (which is something I would be prepared to do for any relative). He was 19.

Called his name a few times already and always turn my head towards his (now empty) chair as I come in the front door.

Wife couldn't stand it and was on the interweb looking for a new one as I was digging the grave in the front garden, not to 'replace' him but to start another 'relationship'. We now have a little scrap of a kitten who is so beautiful, scatty and playful..... and 2 more kittens coming in a few weeks!! Our house just doesn't work without a cat mooching around.

Aw :( It hurts in a way I never imagined. But our cat is my first ever pet as my parents weren't 'pet people'. I guess that even if you have had pets no longer with you the pain is still the same when it happens again.

That is what we miss - though never imagined that it filled a part of daily life in the way it did.

The house didn't feel empty, it just felt quiet and still. Whilst watching TV the living room door didn't suddenly start swinging open, nothing moved or caught the eye, nothing jumped onto my lap or came screeching thru the cat flap, there were no weird 'bumps' happening as the cat jumped down off a bed or window sill, just quiet, little stuff that you didn't even realise that you were 'used to' happening.

We had 5 cats once and after losing the boy and being left with none at all it should be fun to have 3 kittens again.... and messy

What are you going to kick after a bad round now??

Sorry....just trying to lighten the mood. You have my condolences :(

Yes - that's right. I was wondering what it was. It's the silence and stillness. Nothing dramatic - just thing like the occasional bump as he jumped off a worktop onto the floor - or the noise as he went out the cat flap. Or if he was lying quietly behind me all of a suddening he'd move and quietly start grooming himself. Or I'd suddenly notice he was sitting at the door to the room I was in - just quietly looking at me. Thanks for pointing out what's missing. So what I need is a quiet cat noises recording to have playing in the background.

Yep, they are the moments you really realise.

We're going looking for a new pooch at the dogs homes tomorrow.

We'll go to Cats Protection for our next kitten

We went to the Merseyside dogs home today and returned with this little fella.

Mourn your loss, remember them well, but also go and get another one when your ready. After two weeks we felt the time was right to have a cursory look, but we overwhelmingly decided to bring "Flash" home with us today. Good luck SILH, when looking.

Thankyou @Lb - we're going to wait until after the kids come home from Uni in three weeks time - so they can experience Finn not being about - then late April we'll start looking.

We decided not to get another cat as it was so upsetting when ours died. Now that another one has adopted us ten years later we realise it was a mistake. It is slightly spooky that the new cat is a ringer for the previous one.

Murph was turned off a year ago last Christmas. He was our second cat. Dibs was the first, who was a big ginger Tom, rescued from a local barn. Murph came from battersea at old Windsor. Dibs must have been run over, aged 5, as he didn't quite make it home one night.

Our current two incumbents came from battersea, a big ginger Tom, part Maine ***, part jeez knows what, and a small black female, who has attention deficit disorder, as far as I can tell. They are great.

When we don't have a cat in the house, it's not the same. They clatter about, make a mess, shed hair, claw stuff, make a racket, but it makes it home.

I miss the ones who have gone before, but enjoy the ones I have.

My daughter has said that other than our departed Finn (named after the great Finlay Calder by the way) she doesn't actually much like cats. Hmmm.

Lost one of our cats today. Hit by a car but fortunately killed instantly and didn't suffer. Made worse by the fact I'm half way through an offshore trip and not at home. My other half and older boy are in bits about it. Luckily the younger one isn't really old enough to understand yet.Milly2.jpg
