"A look at birdie"

It is a baseball term, where the pitcher doesn't wrap his fingers around the ball, so it comes out of his hand with no spin and not really a clear idea of where it is going... the lack of stabilising spin means the ball kind of wobbles about on its way to the batter with no set path, making it very difficult to hit (and catch for the catcher) as it can move about all over the place.

I guess in golf it would describe a shot that doesn't seem to follow a clear trajectory? Or is affected by gusts of wind to make it move about in the air?

As good an opening post as ave read on here Cake, ( hmmmmm cake ).
welcome to the fruitcake shop me man

I haven't decided which ball I'm going to 'game' this weekend........

If I stand on the tee of a par 4 and can see the hole and think 'If I get down in 3 from here' does that count as a look at birdie?

'He's out with his metal wood hybrid driving rescue club, or whatever they call them these days...'

They've been around for over a decade and they're called hybrids ffs!!

speith and willet saying we....has anyone told them how stupid they sound

Knuckleball has very low spin and will bore through the wind.

Ah... so in golfing terms it is called knuckleball, not because it apes the erratic flight of a baseball knuckleball pitch, but because it has the same 'low spin' properties. Makes sense.

you need to listen and count how many times an American commentator says "right there"

thats a good shot "right there"
that's a difficult shot "right there"
that's a big guy "right there"
that's a massive drive "right there"

it makes my piss itch!!!!

edit : my new hatred is "that guy really knows how to GOLF his ball" ffs!!!

That last one had HID laughing.

The hate is strong in here. Imagine getting wound up at people thousands of miles away using different words and phrases.

Ok. How do i play it, apart from completely accidentally? Scabby hit off the bottom edge perhaps?

Its generally strike. Don't ask me as I am usually centre but low on the face.

One thing I do know is it isn't always the exact middle of the face. Usually slightly toe and a little higher on the face.

Was gonna stick this in the Masters thread but its not just this tournament

Commentators have officially forgotten how to say 'chance'

It seems no one has a birdie chance anymore, or a chance for birdie they only ever have a 'look at birdie'

Totally irrational but I just want to slap the offenders

Because most of my golf viewing is with US commentary the increase in the use of the phrase is probably more noticeable to me but since I've pointed it out to you I hope it gets stuck in your head like when you hear someone signing a song you hate but catch yourself humming it all day... :D

Any other phrases from the commentary team that get your goat?

Oh I just remembered another one, 'get into red figures' aaarrrggghhhhhh just say under par for gods sake!

And breathe

I'll still take this tonight over another stint on the mic from bjorn. Not sure I've ever heard someone with such a boring voice take to the commentary box before.
