If you look due East you can see Jupiter low in the sky and below it beaming like a torch is Venus, really bright at the moment. Right between them and off to the right a little is a faint twinkling star (redish?)... anyone know what one that is?

That would be Aldebaran - the "eye" of Taurus The Bull. This is a winter constellation. Oh dear, where did summer go (if it ever arrived).

I thought it was but it seemed too high... I thought it was supposed to be lower, closer to Venus?

(Apparently Betelgeuse should also be visible and I was wondering if it might be that? but again it might be too high?)

Aldebaran.

Betelgeuse wouldn't have been above the horizon until about 4.15 and well below Venus and Jupiter.

You probably already know James, but the double-check to know if it's Aldebaran you're looking at is that it's the bottom left (and brightest) of 5 stars close together in the shape of a > pointing slightly downwards.

I have a pic that I took messing about with settings shortly after I got my new camera.

Aldebaran is closest to the top left in the right half of the window (the star top left of the > is not visible), and Betelgeuse is the bright one closest to the top of the window in the left side.

didnt know you had a view of the sphinx from your bedroom Gary ;)

Yes, the wife went through an Egyptian phase and we have well over a dozen ornaments in the bedroom.
A 2' tall Anubis staring across the room at me isn't my idea of tasteful decor either!
