43 points but only 5th place

TBH, at this time of year, although the courses play longer due to lack of roll, the greens are softer and will hold almost any shot - so, points tallies can be high. At my club, the avaerage points are usually 2 to 3 points higher than in the summer where greens are hard and much faster and your ball can roll into trouble off the fairways.

Couldnt agree more, for me i always seem to get my h/c cuts between October and March/April, then spend the summer maintaining it. like TXT said, bad drives don't bounce as violently and generally you can club into a green one strong and it will bite. likewise if you come up short its alot easier this time of the year to pitch/chip very close to the pin. The only thing in winter i find harder is putting, lumpy bobbly greens can be an issue as can holes with a worn lip. i had 3/4 puts roll out sunday that should have dropped where our pins havent been moved for a few weeks as the course has been quiet

As rosecott has pointed out, all this talk of 'banditry' is just a little overegged as 43 points against a CSS of 39 is actually not that exceptional. No offence, full-throttle - still a very good score, but we've all played 4-under our handicap at some stage, haven't we? (though for the life of me I can't remember when I last did it!)

Quite right JezzE, but dont spoil the craic, its only harmless banter, its not as if we want to take him out and shoot him in front of his horse (with his own six shooter).

Wise words Arnold - I just worry that too many golfers have a propensity to forget their own 'wonder rounds' when raising the topic of banditry...

Absolutely true. I had mine in October with +7 on a Bogey. Plus 6 at the turn, came out of the blue and could really have ended up as plus anything.

Didnt forget mine, they all go on a spreadsheet over the course of the season, submitted same to pro & handicap secretary and got a cut at the annual review.

Who knows how low I could go if I take off the six shooters and the chaps!!

would the fact I had just been cut from 28 to 24 and still manged to score 43points make a differnece to your opinion. Me, I was delighted, just got to try and repeat the performance of my new hc of 22

F_T - I have said that it's a great score and I'm really pleased for anyone whose handicap is coming down because I remember what a great feeling that used to be (sadly my handicap fluctuation is what you might call stagnant these days!).

All I was trying to do was temper the reaction to 43 points just a little once you'd indicated what CSS was, as some people were getting a little carried away on the 'bandit' front. 43 points is a bit of a movable feast really, but a lot of people put 2 and 2 together and made 5. If you'd come on and said you'd got 40 points against a CSS of a 'normal' 36 the resulting thread would have been very different I suspect - yet that is in effect what your score was the equivalent of.

That said, I reiterate what I've already said - congratulations on a very good score, and here's to a high-teen handicap before the winter's over?

You should have played both the rounds concerned next month. You would then probably have had the privilege of being the first in the country to fall foul of ESR (Exceptional Score Reduction). Assuming that the score which led to your first cut was at least 4 shots better than CSS (must have been) and your most recent one was 4 better than CSS, you could have been flagged up for an additional chop.
