2nd shot into a par 5

Sounds a bit like our 15th for distance, though our 15th is tighter than this. 3w every time with that little danger, unless the lie's crap. And even then, I'd probably still have a pop. Worst that happens is that I hit a horror 70 yards or so down the fairway and leave myself a 6iron or something.

I am such a cautious player. There would need to be a decent bail out and not much trouble for me to take on a 230yard approach.

So early in the round. Why take the risk. Settle in and make the par, possible pitch and putt for bird. Its a marathon, not a sprint.

It's the FIRST hole.... you've hit a good tee shot and you've 230 to the front edge (245 flag) ...is it out with the big club and go for the green or do you go (something like) 7-iron then wedge?

(Danger is 30yds left and 20yds right)

this a serious thread?

Unless you have physical disabilities, a junior or someone who's drives roll out to 160 yds you should be going for it everytime, it's not even up for consideration. Most teachers will agree, John Jacobs says go for it.

wheres the fun in playing like a woos:rolleyes:

I had exactly that last night on the 15th @ Glenbervie ... HDID Kenny convinced me to go for the GM shot and I landed in the LH bunker, a par wasn't good enough and we lost the hole!

5 iron, tap in eagle. done.

5 iron for me, I don't tend to miss hit it that much so even if I didn't get it clean being early (1st hole), it should still leave a wedge of some description for me, hopefully a decent strike and my gap wedge to go pin hunting but at worst a 2-putt and par :smirk:

After last nights lesson and the new swing and instilled confidence booster, that safer option could change

7 iron + wedge. Unless you are a low handicapper who can hit consistently long second shots that are on the edge of what you can do then it is not worth it. I could maybe hit rescue to the green in this situation 2 out of 10. Where does the ball end up the other 8 times? 7 iron and wedge will have me on the green 7 out of 10, hopefully.

A good question highlighting it was the 1st. Later on in the round the answer may be different but I don't want to blow my round on the 1st if I can avoid it.

That's basically our first hole get a good drive away and the green is sitting there for the taking but if you don't quite catch it or it's playing into the wind you can be left with a 230 odd yard 2nd shot, which is right on my 4 wood limit, I like to leave myself around the 100 yard mark if I decide to lay up but it just feels wrong laying up with a 9iron!

The fact that most people are considering the options suggests that it is up for consideration.
