I'm playing off 13.7 at the mo. Will be 12 in the summer when I straighten out my Driver again!
I’m looking to get down to 6 at the end of the year. I think this will be some challenge but can do 9 holes a fair few times in 3 over. Just not 18 as yet. What do you chaps think? Feasable?
Ive shot 3 over and been 2 over after 12 on another occasion. My other aim is to hit a double+ free round. This will certainly help!

Its possible, but probably not very likely unless you happen to be consistently performing well under your handicap. Remember that 3 over for 9 holes will not give you that great a reduction later in your progression.

It will also depend on things like the course (is the CSS typically close to par, or way under ?).

not sure why but when i read the title i heard the theme tune to mission impossible in my head.

Anyway, EIW, we seem to be off the same hc (there abouts) and let me tell ya from my experience ai
ming to improve your hc by over 50% is going to be a mission and half if you simply do the numbers.

i worked the numbers out for someone previously, but i reckon if you played in a comp every week, and constantly improved at a rate of 2less than your hc every comp, you would just about get there by the end of the year, but can you honestly say this is possible.

i know how hard i hard to work, how many comps i had to play, and how many range sessions i had to do to get from 15-12 in one season, which is a 20% improvement. Im often putting in front nines that are +1/+2/+3 (so atleast 3 better than my hc) but doing it over a complete round is another thing, good luck and all the best, but as said if you could get to 9, that would put you into single figures with a improvement percentage of about 32%, and that would be some achievement.

Tough tough ask, you'll need to play as many medals as are available and be under your handicap more often than not.

Good luck but I feel you should aim for 9 first then see what happens, droping 7 shots is hard even from say 20 to 13.

exactly valentino, and thats being cat 3 so getting cut 0.3 per shot, not 0.2, and its also not taking into account a smaller buffer for them bad rounds,

I would say it’s possible especially if you are down south and you still have qualifiers well into the winter. It will be tough going from 14 to 6, but I would say 8 or 9 are more realistic.

A couple of years ago I went from 13 to 8 by July then stayed the same till the end of the season. I then went up point one every time I played last year and went back up to 10 then back down to 8.8 in one competition.

Good luck.

Thanks OS - you saved my typing fingers as this is pretty much what I think too

An ambitious target, as your handicap drops your margin for error will also reduce and the demands for you to be consistent increase significantly. Shooting level par over 9 holes is not overly difficult to do occasionally, dropping 6 shots or less over 18 is altogether harder.

that said good luck in your efforts.

So you are really saying that you will go from 12 in the summer to 6 by the end of the year?

Not on imho, particularly if you don't belong to a club at the moment.

where does it say he's not a club member?

I did 18 to 5 in one year, practiced everyday even in the rain, played in opens as well- so its possible if you can spare the time and work at it

adidas - impossible is nothing bla bla bla ! sure if you really really work at it then yeah he might. in the real world, theres not many who make that big a jump!

he sounds like a friend of mine. he can shoot very very low. a few over and can go out and have a complete nightmare. there is NO consistancy in his game which is why he played of 14-15-16 all last summer. thing is he can go 8-9-10 under that for his handicap but doesnt do it all the time!

Good point actually, so effectively going from 12 to 6 in 3 or 4 months? I'd say there is little chance of that being achieved. 8 medals a month ion average, 32 medals in 4 months and you need to be 60 under par on aggregate (for a 6 shot drop) to get there, no margin for error and a round 3 under your handicap every time (to include a 1 shot CSS drop under the Part of the course).

Good luck, you'll need it.

60 under CSS ;)

surely getting into the single figures category is every golfers dream first and foremost. my brother says that if he got to single figs that he could happily give up the game. forever is your life you could say that you used to play off single figures. ie - you were quite handy at it!
