Playing in Saturday's medal one of the chaps I was playing with sliced his tee shot into a slope on our 14th. He played out to leave himself 120 yards to the pin. Now our 14th has several dips, troughs and slopes from where he was till you got to the green. The green itself is three tiered and the pin was placed at the back so in reality it was probably closer to 130 yards away. He takes out his putter, allows for the range of breaks en route and after weaving it's way through the undulating terrain it's arrowing in on the flag. He'd smashed it 130 yards to six feet. A fluke you say? Nope he'd done the same shot with varying backlifts, from over 100 yards earlier in the round all to within a couple of yards. Purists will say it's not golf and you can hear the ping from his putter on adjacent fairways but it works for him.

Anyone else seen someone execute a non textbook shot to such great effect?

I eagled the 16th at our place (Buddon Links) par 5 with a drive that left me over 100yds to go and two putts. My playing partner thought I was nuts, but I put my first putt to about 8ft and rolled in my eagle putt. Drive and two putts eagle!

My playing partner does it all the time. He has a broomhandle putter and weilds it from anywhere up to about 80 yards if he can see a line. Last week in a winter league 4BBB game he 3 putted from deep clag for a half (with a shot) as it was safer than his usual thin, 80 yards through the green. With the half secure we took the match 4 and 2.

James is dead right, of course, it's because he cant chip, although he has played off 9 at one time!

Played a guy at Sunningdale Ladies (he was an artisan) who used a very old wood with no discernible number (looked like a ladies 9 wood) from anything up to 40 yards in with varying length of backswing and was deadly. Fortunately his putting was woeful and we sneaked through 2&1

There's many a purist would say that that IS golf and can imagine Old Tom Morris having a smile as he looked down on that little throw back to golf as it used to be played round the old links of Scotland.

Someone once had an Eagle with 3 putts on a par 5.

On the previous hole he sent his electric trolley forwards to the next tee. But he'd pressed the wrong button and it kept going. He only had a putter in his hand, a ball and a tee in his pocket so he tee'd up and smashed it with the putter. He got about 200 yards out of it. Still not caught up with his trolley he hits another full putter and gets another 200 yards down the hole. The group ahead have stopped his trolley by the green so he has to use his putter again from about 140. Gives it another smash and it rolls up the green and in.

Easy game
