Is £160 the new magic number for golf shoes?
i have came across a few at this price and even a pair of gutties (for those who dont know what gutties are, trainers plimsoles,in this case golf shoes with no spikes ) Lol
do you think this is a bit steap or just they way things are?
by the way quality looking shoes.

yeah mate i agree there is a good few quality shoes out there cheaper than what is quoted.
i am just suprised at some of the prices

It is like everything though they will only charge what people are willing to pay. I bet if no one bought them they wouldn't be sitting at that price for so long! If you do a bit of digging you can normally get them for much cheaper on the interwebs.

It happened with replica football boots a few years back.

The top-end replica boots in 2006 were Adidas and Nike. You could buy the pro's version for £120-£140 RRP

I think the companies looked at the percentage of people who were paying top-dosh for the better product, rather than the toned down £30-60 versions, and realised there was a killing to be made.

Hence now with football boots, there is a 'pros-model' costing £249 - and people are still paying it. As has been mentioned, if people are prepared to pay it, the companies will exploit it.

Of course its each to their own, but much of it is total exploitation. You can get perfectly good golf shoes from the £30 - £50 range with plenty of choice.

Some people prefer to spend the extra money though, probably for a variety of reasons.

As has been said above, if companies think people will pay the money, they will try their arm.

A few years ago a good mate of mine was a supplier of photocopy machines, covering the Bond Street/New Bond Street area of town. One of his clients on NBS, a rather pricey shoe shop, had a pair of shoes in the window for about £250 (bear in mind this was 15 - 20 years ago). Tony got talking to the manager and asked about the pricing and why they were so expensive. As he knew Tony, he laughed and said something like "you'll never guess the reason". Turns out that they were in the same position in the window for sale for 6 weeks at £50. Noone bought any, none, not one pair. In the two weeks since he changed the price to £250, he had sold 6 pairs!

Some people THINK because they are paying more, theyre getting something better. This isnt always the case.

Shop around, try the £30 - £50 pairs on, you might be pleasantly surprised :-)

I went to AG back in October with a budget of £100 in mind....tried on Footjoys and Adidas all around the £100 mark but for one reason or another I didn't like them....ended up buying a pair of Adidas Powerbands for £50 which were more comfortable than the shoes at £100. What made it even better was that I had the trusty Tescos vouchers that meant when I got to the till I only paid £20. Bargain!

I then got injured and haven't actually worn them yet!

Some of this is marketing psychology. People aren't able to value things in absolute terms, only relative, so it is much easier to say that those DryJoys are worth £100 when you have a £160 pair to compare them against. Footjoy don't expect to sell many £160 pairs, but they have a fair idea, and plenty of evidence suggests that they are right, that the existence of the £160 pair as a reference point will drag up many sales from what would otherwise have been a £70 pair to a £100 pair.

The same effect is seen in many other areas. It is easier to justify buying the second top model because you have 'compromised' with yourself and decided not to go for the top one.

Here is a well known example of this effect: http://www.customerthink.com/blog/whats_the_best_way_to_sell_a_pair_of_800_shoes

Marketing has very little to do with Product; it has an enormous to do with Psychology - and culture.

A well known brand of premium Whisky publicised it price reduction in Japan - and sales dropped massively!

our pro shop just got in the new ecco street wear , look really nice and very tempted but £160 is alot of money ,but ive got a bit in credit so i will prob end up getting them, should look after them but i wont as never do

You could get two or three good quality pairs for £160. Could not justify that sort of money on one pair unless they were guaranteed to last for 10 years.

I bought a pair of Footjoys about 4 years ago. I think they were £65. I'm still using them, had them re-cleated a few times, and there is still a lot of wear in them, so they are excellent value for money. I don't think I would ever pay £160 for a pair, but if you work it out over the number of times you may use them, they then appear quite cheap.

the ecco shoe is a fabulous bit of kit and worth the money i have two pairs and they are by far the best shoe on the market, its a case of if you can afford them buy them if not don't.

As most of the brands update their range each year I get them when the new ones are out, picked up 2 pairs of Adidas that were £120RRP in 2010 for £54 a pair. Still a good shoe and style still loooks good but just not the latest one - dont really care about that.
