Just compiling a list of swing thoughts I've had or read about, which ones have you had? I'm expecting a pretty big list......

I'll start.....

Low and slow
Keep the club head online for the first few inches
Cock my wrists early
cock my wrists late
Don't cock my wrists at all
Get the weight over the right hip
Get the weight inside the right foot
Roll the wrists
Don't roll the wrists
Hold on to the angle
Kick the knee in to start the swing
Keep my head down
look at the ball
Turn!
Turn the hips
resist turning the hips
Don't overswing
Swing easy
Get in front of the ball
Stay behind the ball
Don't shank this!!!
lead with the hips
Take it back inside
take it back straight.....

That's the tip of the iceberg, any more?

I was a fan of Johnny Miller in the 70,s and have always followed his swing thought, the the downswing should start with the legs driving forwards. It stops you hitting with just the arms and shouders and coming over the top. Old school but works (sometimes) for me !

At any one time I appear to have about 1,150,100,310 swing thoughts.

I then take a deep breath.....

And the ball flies off the clubhead.

I've no idea what I do but I seem quite good at it so I'll keep doing it.

My main swing thought for driving is: Smack it
My main swing thought for irons is: be smooth
My main swing thought for putting is: don't three putt

That use to be me but the range is the place for swing thoughts and the course is about hitting it, finding it and hitting it again until it gets into the bloody hole.

It is a completely new approach for me and a real struggle to keep at it but we'll see now we can play regularly if it works or not

Currently reading Ben Hogan's 5 Modern Fundemantals.

Not so much swing thoughts, but numerous minor alterations which I had never even considered before.

Such as turn the left foot a quater turn open, otherwise this can cause all manner of problems. A real education!!

last year i had three swing thoughts... now i've bloody forgotten what they were!!!

now i just go and play golf and my scores are better - actually, that should read "were better", as the weather has curtailed any golf i've had recently. All going to change this weekend though :)

One swing thought that i heard on a video by Paddy H was to "keep your sternum over the ball"

It works. Keeps your weight nice and central with the irons and allows the turn to happen properly.

Other one i heard was "don't let go of the club mid swing"

Aim at the target, dont hit until you are comfortable that you are aiming at the target... so many times its easy to know you are aiming slightly right and your subconscious tries to allow for it and compensate only to hook the life out of the ball.

My other thought is to put a full swing in now as Ive got a better rhythm and complete the swing, I used to finish a little short.

Putting thoughts are fairly simple, with my 2ball I take a practice stroke above the ball and visualise the flash of white from the putter across the green, if i can see it heading in the intended target, I hit it otherwise adjust and hit.

I've been thinking about this - surely there will always be swing thoughts, won't there? Do you guys have a completely clear head when addressing the ball or do you conciously have a thought such as 'nice and smooth' or 'nice takeaway' or 'remember to follow through to the finish'?

I always have swing thoughts - never swing changes - just swing thoughts.

Am I in the minority?

"Keep your left arm straight" and "Watch the ball disappear" are my two current ones though when I'm playing well I have the whole Bill Murray Cinderella story thing running through my head

"He's a cinderella boy...tears in his eyes I guess"

Practice swing: - left arm straight on the way back, right arm straight after impact.

Actual swing: - 1.... 2.... 3. Impact is at 3. Helps me keep a consistant rhythm.

I have a few which crop up now and again but try and keep head clear on course, will analyse during practice more.

1. Breathe out when making a putting stroke (stops tension). Not as easy as it sounds.
2. Clubhead straight back first foot and a half (driver especially) - really works for me and creates width.
3. Grip pressure as if you were holding a small bird - guilty of choking club sometimes.
4. Saying "Sam Snead" for tempo i.e. Sam as you take the club back and Snead as you downswing.
