My 2 hole in ones were both really good shots but a 4 iron at Blackmoor to, about a 190 yard, par 3 whilst playing with Smiffy will stick in my mind as a really sweetly hit long iron.

there is something special about a well struck long iron

Playing at Highwoods in a friendly game, I was about 160 out but under a row of fir trees up the right hand side of the 8th. Stream about 50 yards short of the hole with a steep bank up to the green.

I chased a beautifully clipped 4 iron low under the branches which cleared the stream, hit the bank and bounced onto the green ending up a couple of inches away for a tap in birdie.
That, without a shadow of a doubt, is the best shot I have ever hit. And I had called it.
Mate couldn't believe it, and I then birdied the 9th as well.

Drove a short 270 yard par 4 and lipped out the eagle putt.

50 deg wedge in to 2 foot from the pin. Nothing amazing so far!

Playing in a stableford comp last year, i was 1 over gross stood on the 17th tee (par 5) thinking i need to make birdie as the 18th is a tough par 4. Think the stars must have aligned or something as i flushed my tee shot, dead centre of the fairway, then flushed my second into the middle of the green and finally drained the 15 footer for eagle.

The combination of those three shots in that situation were my best. Dissapointingly i made an error with my tee shot and approach into 18, but got up and down from the back bunker for bogey to finish level gross. Had just gone up to 5.5 prior to the round, finished with 43 points.

I chipped in on the 18th hole at Aylesbury Vale GC for a birdie to win a pairs competition (as it turned out). What made it special was I was playing with my dad and it was his first board comp win and our first and only win together.....that was special.

The Road hole of the Old Course, a couple of weeks before the Open during one of the club meets so it was a medal competition. I was on a good score and ESPN were there filming some B-roll for a documentary they were doing to support their Open coverage. The crew ask if they could film us playing, I was first on the tee, I love pressure situations and said, "Sure, feel free"

I made decent contact with my drive but I went right, good for distance but it was fading and it looked very tight. The line looked close to OB and at best I'd be nestled on the right side of the fairway near to or on the path depending on the carry. The crew asked what I thought, "Probably on the path if I'm lucky", I say.

"Great! That's just what we're after, can we film your second shot too?"

We walk around the corner and I'm just hoping I'm in play somewhere. I see my ball pretty quickly as it's sat in the middle of the path, next to the hotel conservatory. A flat stance and decent lie but it's still the path, I have to remind myself being in play is all that mattered.

I had about 165 yards to the front of the green. A 5 iron would get me rolling past that. The crew started filming again... People on the path paused and started gathering around us. I can see the grandstand up the side of the 17th green, I momentarily think about the situation of being filmed with all the Open branding as a backdrop, I try to get that out of my head and just think about getting a good contact on the ball.

I was really feeling the pressure now, I was aiming to the heart of the green. The line from this position isn't that difficult, being on the right gives an easier line to the green, aim straight to the front middle and the ball will generally either hold up on the front of the green or chase up onto the plateau. No real danger unless you go left, long or right. OK, so maybe it's not that easy...

Nice smooth swing and I feel straight away it's good contact. Held my finish, saw the ball land slightly short but it was front middle and it ran up. I turned to the camera crew, gave them a wink, said "Hope you got that" and walked away. I gave my fellow competitor a thumbs up and an expression of "Yes, don't ask, I was cacking myself, thanks."

My ball finished in the middle of the green on the upper level, 20 feet from the hole. I 3 putted for a bogey.

Bogey'd 18 too as I was still shaking but it didn't matter, still came in with a good score and the best 5 iron I've ever hit.

Being a high handicapper most shot i hit well are great!!

However, recently I have hit two very sweet shots that help give me the buzz to come back and slog around the golf course again.

1st one was two weeks ago on our 18th in the monthly medal; had unfortunately fatted my third shot 70 yards to around 77 yards from the pin. Whipped out the SW - full swing - and the ball fell to about six inches past the pin, back spinning to 2 inches away for a nice par to finish - shot made my day on a disaster of a day as my medal score wasn't very good!!

2nd shot was last week; had a nice drive off the tee however kicked off the fairway into the short rough. As I got closer I could see that I was blocked into the green by a tree a few yards in front of me (95 yards out from the pin). Decided to go for it with the usual throw away comment "I can see a gap". Hit the shot through said gap (miraculously) and landed about 12 foot away from the pin; unfortunately two jabbed for a par.

One of my most memorable shots was after playing badly on our 15tj hole. Hooked my tee shot into trees then duffed my next two out of them leaving me still around 180 yards to green :(

got my hybrid out and thought stuff it got nothing to lose (as water was now in play in front of me) and hit it beautiful!

I was thinking that's going to be nicely on the green and will gladly snatch a bogey only for it to bounce once on the front and then land in the hole!

result I fluked a par! :)

It was even more special as a few people playing on the holes next to mine all cheered as it went in, however I never let on it was for par as I think they all thought it was an eagle shot lol ..:)

At the Old Farts meet at Forest Pines last Summer.

i had played poorly and lost my match. The last was a 185 yard par 3, pin was in the middle of the green. With a good strike I tend to carry my 5 iron just over 150 yards. However, there was a gentle breeze helping and I thought let's go for it and took a fuller swing that usual.

Struck it it perfectly and it pitched five foot from the flag, and stopped just another two foot on leaving a seven foot putt for a two. Missed the putt.

April 1988. NE 'v' NW. Stood on the 17th tee at Hesketh GC 1 down. Its a par 5 dogleg left that has a copse/wood down the left that starts at about 100yds-ish from the tee and extends pretty much all the way to the green.

A hooked drive saw me on the 18th fairway. Choice of either playing back onto the 17th fairway with a short iron or go all out with a 3 wood and aim for the gap where players walk from the 17th green to the 18th tee. Being 1 down, option 1 wasn't really on, especially as my opponent had nailed his drive.

BOOM! And 2 putts later the match was all square with 1 to play. An 6-8ft snaking putt on the 18th for birdie saw a win 1up.

Matches against Yorkshire, Scotland, Notts and then we were in the final against the Southeast. No fairy tale ending but what a summer of golf.

16th tee - Old Course St.Andrews - +4 gross and really getting nervous about achieving my lifetime ambition of breaking 80 round there. Caddy gives me a 3-wood and tells me to go straight down the tiger line to the right of the Principle's Nose bunker.

"What if I push it".

"Don't" - in a broad Scottish accent.

I nailed it right down the middle - made par and wound up with a gross 77. What a caddy. What a shot!

Tuesday Medal, struggling for buffer, hit a great drive up the par 5 17th, looking at an uphill lie 203 yards away I pulled out my 3 iron for 2nd shot hit a slight fade that flew towards green landed on front of green and disappeared from sight, got unto green and thought its either in hole or ran through back........

lucky for me it was in the hole :D :D

ended up getting a wee 0.4 cut :D

Tough to pick but probably the best in recent memory was the final of the singles matchplay last year. Walked off the 8th green 3up, after my opponent put 3 balls OOB.

9th is a 150yd par 3, wind off the right as usual. I was thinking if I could get it close I would put him under real pressure. Smooth swing with a 7i, hit it sweet and the ball started off about 5yds right of the flag. As it reached the apex, my opponent said "You might be buying some drinks..."

One bounce 2 feet to the right of the cup, then a hop to the left, clattered the flag and disappeared. 4up. And to be fair to my opponent, he was made up for me too. Maybe not the best shot but certainly the most impactful 🙂

I've had a few memorable shots, especially when I had my first sub 80, but today I hit the sweatest 4i I've ever done.

I was 172 to the front of the green and it was a red (front) pin so thought 180 yards at least, I was just off the fairway but felt I could still get right through the back of the ball, it's a small green with the pond to the right and the woods right against the left of the green with 2 greenside bunkers guarding front left,

As soon as I hit it I knew it was a flyer, I felt nothing, it was like a hot knife through butter as I struck through the ball watching as it cut through the early morning cold air with a slight into wind and it pitched 4ft before the pin but jumped only another foot forward due to it being a raised front green.

I walked 6 inches taller down that fairway, what a feeling 😎🏌️⛳

I holed a 240 yarder for an Albatross a few years ago. Was looking through the back of the green when my brother went to check the cup...." it's in the *^#+*@ hole " came the reply !!!!

Chip in on the 3rd green. It has quite a bump in the middle, and I was a couple of yards of green on the wrong side of the bump. Chip landed soft like butter just past the top, then tracked nicely towards the hole until it eventually hit the hole for a birdy.
