Well the sun is shining and I've walked to work without gloves and hat on so it must be nearly golf time and my thoughts turn to a shot I made during a scramble. A mate never tires of telling the story at the club.
Stood on the 18 with only me to play, the other three had all drives in and we were going well. Proper pressure shot. I smashed the ball up the 10th straight as an arrow. The 18th is a par five so no real problems just some massive trees to negotiate to get it back on the right fairway. Well the banter was on, about how we'd (I'd) blown it on one shot blah blah. As we approached my ball I looked up and said the now immortal words, "I can see a gap", which I could to the green through trees that are 50ft tall. A practice swish with my 5 iron, set up and hit the sweetest iron in my life. It sailed though the gap in the trees and landed on the green stopping about 5 foot from the hole and I got a round on applause from the watching four lads on the 17th tee.

Hard to remember the greatest, but did have one last month when travelling in Cape Town. Playing with work colleagues so the banter was quite strong (you know South African's like to wind you up) as we stood on the tee of a 307 yrd par 4. Lagoon all down the left and thin fairway up the right.

As usual they were egging me on to go for the green as it clearly means certain death in a matchplay situation. Only a friendly so told them to shut up and addressed the ball and whack - pure strike straight on the green pitched on quite a soft freshly watered green and stopped after 6ft. Pin high. Missed the eagle putt, but still shut em up!

My best was a half shot with a 9-iron. My approach had hooked wildly to the left, hit a tree and had bounced onto the next fairway. It ended up about 50 yards from the flag, with a mass of trees between the ball and the green. Too high to hit over them, a bunker in the way which made it impossible to hit a low chip shot under the branches and roll it on. But there was a small gap in the foilage, almost like a little window. It was like magic, I must have channeled Seve in that moment or something, because I am normally not over precise with my shots (and I think I was still playing off -54 at the time), but there was never a doubt in my mind that that shot would work. I did not even do a practice swing or anything, I just stepped up to my ball and hit it through that tiny window as if that is something I do every day. It landed about 6 feet from the flag, bounced once and stopped. Made the putt as well. It was true magic. I will never forget that shot. And I could not repeat it ever again, I think.

Hole in one on the 4th at Sherwood Forest.
180'ish yards off the white tees into a strong head wind. I hit the perfect strike with a 5 iron, a small/baby fade landed a couple of feet short of the pin and rolled in almost deadweight.
It was as well as I've ever hit a ball, in tough conditions on a beautiful hole on a great course.

Far too many to even contemplate listing...😀
I do remember a llw 75 yard pitch that I clipped cleanly, pitched once about an inch left of the flag, bounced about 3 feet past and screwed back into the hole...
Bit 'Pro' that one😉

Either the SW from 105 which I holed for an eagle at Alcaidesa Heathland, or the Rescue 2nd shot into the 1st at La Cala America to set-up the 15 footer which I drained for eagle.

Probably a 3/4 9 iron from around 100 yards early last year, landed just in front of the flag and rolled into the hole for my first ever eagle.
Got a hole in one last year as well but didn't see it go in so I'm not counting that 😁

I'd most likely go for my first ever eagle. Was playing with a mate of mine who plays off 4, was a large dogleg to the left which you can go for the green on if you carry about 260 yards. He was giving it all his talk and went for it, and made it. His ball sitting just on the fringe of the green. I decided to play a rescue up the middle and had 120 left to flag. The green runs pretty severely from front to back so I landed it on the front and it ran right towards the hole. I am pretty sure the hole grew arms and grabbed my ball. Was delighted as it just disappeared

In my junior days I played the 7th at my old club (soon to be current club) in March!

the 7th is around 330 yards if I remember correctly but there's a huge ditch before the green so you can't hit driver. I'd layed up and given myself about 140 the pin.
Hit the sweetest 8 iron with a little draw on, was all over the pin and me and 2 mates watched it land straight in the whole.

Will never forget that shot!

Approach shot into the 17th on the Old Course after my drive had a hotel-assisted bounce. Left me a fair way back so out came the 4 wood and for the first time that day it went straight and rolled onto the front of the green.

Yep...I left the putt about a foot short!

Not the greatest but one I look back on the most. Drive off the 17th tee at St Andrews, bombing it over the Hotel sign, dropping beautifully on to the fairway. I was pooing bricks on the tee because of the hole reputation and I was just a couple over for the round at the time!

Maybe not my greatest ever - but up there in context.

In the last round of Winter League K/O three weeks ago. 1st extra extra hole. I'd been up all the way round - opponent wins 17th to square the match. On 18th he nails a cracking 8ft putt on a temp to half with me. His dander was up and I could see he had victory in his eyes and stride.

I knew I had to give him a shot on our par 4 2nd - it's a very tough par 4 and I knew I'd struggle to get a par - so knew he could play for a 5 and would most likely win the hole and the match. I felt that I had to close out the match on our par 5 1st. After 3 shots he was maybe 15yds from the flag. After 2 shots I was 40yds. I chipped stone dead - he couldn't even consider making me putt - and so had to hole his chip. He didn't. I won the match.

For me my best shot is very context driven. So that one three weeks ago was for me a cracker.

A scratch match a few years ago at an away course. 2 down with 2 holes to play, (I was 1 under par at the time), and my opponent stiffed it to a couple of inches for a gimmie birdie on the 17th. From 90 yards I holed out for an eagle 2 and took the match down 18.

Still lost 1 down as I could only manage a half in par on 18.

Playing a 'friendly' game with 2 mates. It's tight and we're on the 14th. It's a long par 4, slight dog leg to the right with a big pond infront of the green. I smash a 3 wood but it leaks right and heads for some big trees. The chat about pressure etc. is now ramping up. The other 2 are in great shape. They help me find my ball and it's lying well but the outlook is not great. The path to the green is completely blocked. I will have to draw the ball about 40 yards and I have around 190 yards to go (about 170 to clear the water). They chuckle and walk back to their balls. They both stick their seconds on the left side of the green but have very long putts for birdie. They are now looking at me expecting me to go sideways but I had other ideas. I know I can hit a massive draw and I have the length to have a go but I need to get the ball up fairly quickly to clear some bushes infront of me. I pull out a 6 iron. The lads are now giving me so much stick and expecting a massive disaster and some easy money in a few holes time.

I then hit one of those pure shots that I knew was a beauty. It started right of the big trees, climbed enough to clear the bushes infront of me and then started its bend towards the hole. It was exactly long enough and pitched about 2 foot from the hole, took one bounce and pulled back just a bit to leave a tap in birdie.

The silence was deafening for about 10 seconds and then the air turned blue with all sorts of aspersions about my parentage etc.

They both made a mess of their putts and came away with bogeys. 2 shots gained from nowhere and a nice little cushion which I maintained. Thanks for the donation lads.

About 2 years ago i some how managed to hit 2 Eagles on consecutive weekends. One was a pitch in from 60 foot on the 3rd at Chorley, the second was after driving the short par 4 10th and sinking the 4 foot pin. Both these eagles (my first ever ones) were born out of good shots and not really about lucky bounces, so i was very smug about them.

The following week i was again hitting the ball really well and found myself in a great position for a hat trick. I drove the par 4 14th at Chorley with one of the drives of my young life and felt confident that i had hit the green (not visible from the tee box) as we got closer to the green my heart started pounding out my chest with nerves and i almost wanted to have missed the green or to have a silly long putt. I almost wanted not to have the pressure of a short makeable (sp) putt as my nerves were shot.

Got to the green and phew! i was maybe 40 foot from the pin at the back of the green. This really reduced my pressure and made me feel much more at ease.

I lined the putt up with very little break and swung so smoothly. the ball never left the hole and i knew as soon as i made contact it was in.......

it dropped after what felt like a minute of watching.

Never had i been more happy with a a shot, even if my initial feeling was of being a scared'y cat :)

Hat trick of Eagles dont come often for a 18 hc hacker like me

(not had one since...)
