would you say something??

Out of interest- why the mention of their nationality? :)

I would have too, it makes this anecdote more understandable as there will probably be a naievity to the potential danger from golfballs by the Germans, that locals wouldn't have and there is also the issue of a possible language barrier when trying to convey said danger. Golf in Scotland is understood by all as potentially dangerous as every town has a course, in Germany I suspect it isn't that common.

Someone on the course should have had a polite word before a child got hurt.

My 10 word German vocab would have got me pointing at the sky saying 'Achtung' - not sure how that would have come across!

I'd of shown them this on my phone

I think you can be pretty sure that most Germans, especially ones young enough to have small children and even more the ones that go for holidays in Britain know enough English to understand basic concepts without you having to resign to sign language. Scottish accents can be problematic, though. :D

I used to play on a links course that had a very popular beach running alongside it. We also had walkers who would walk along a path along the length on the course. People would walk across the course, play football on the fairways, play in bunkers even sunbathe on the course. My approach was always to warn them that what they were doing was dangerous to themselves and their kids. If they wanted to keep doing what they were doing that was their choice but my conscience was always clear afterwards. I took a friendly approach, not angry or patronising, and no one ever took the hump with my comments. Whether they listened was another matter but at that point if they were hit then more fool them.

Some members would shout and be aggressive but I took the view that is more likely to antagonise people so I do think the "educational" approach is the better one.

Our course is next to a large park and we get regular picnickers in the summer months setting up on a nice quiet patch of grass on our 11th (Hmmm, wonder why it's so quiet???). They usually move on when you explain the danger of being 200 yards from a tee over the brow of a hill. We once had a guy who pitched a tent on the edge of our 18th and stayed 3 days!!
