Well done Lee Westwood - new World Number 1 and first Brit since Faldo. Although it has to be said that the ranking system needs looking at seeing as he's hardly played since the Open!!! Great reward though for 2 years of consistent golf - hope he bags a major soon.

Well Done Lee.

Agreed there has to be a rethink on how the rankings work but as they are the current method of determining the Number 1 that's the way it is. I'm sure Lee would have prefered to be playing to get there but he'll take it, even if it's only for a week or 2 he can say that he's been Number 1.
And not many will ever get to say that.

Lee Westwood Is a Gentleman, a great ambassador for the sport of golf, everyone holds him in high esteem and a nice bloke to boot

I can think of few better or more deserving than him and im glad he is now officially the worlds number 1

Enjoy it while it lasts Lee cos sadly it won't be a long reign.

World rankings are a farce.....hoe can you become No1 despite not performing and likewise how has it taken so long to dislodge a guy who has hardly played and when he has he's played like a knob?

Like or loathe it its down to the rolling 2 year record. Tiger had loads of points stored up but he's been losing waaay more than he's gained. Lee's been performing well regularly for the last 2 years hence the change at the top.
It's not ideal but is there a better way?

How can he be No1 did he play recently, did he win today ,no he didnt so a bit of a farce to be honest,Tiger still No1 in my eyes

Never said that ,but Tiger is but him in the lead and he won't crumble unlike Westwood

I really do wish that all members of the forum would read their posts before they are posted, then we wouldnt be subjected to the gibberish that we see above.

Its really really uber annoying

maybe im having a bad day

Fragger im going to have a lie down now

For the golf he has played over the last 2 years, and the way he conducts himself both on and off the course, Lee Westwood thoroughly deserves his world no 1 ranking, however long it lasts. Well done Lee - long may it last.

First non-major winner to hold the No.1 spot - he's not world no.1 in my book by a long shot, all the other world no.1's you couldn't argue with, Westwood you can.
What's he won again?

Whether Westwood has played recently isn't the issue. As others have said the rankings are calculated over two years. And even if they weren't how, exactly, do you come up with the suggestion Woods is the world's best right now? If anyone genuinely deserves it other than Westwood it's Kaymer.

I have no doubt the German will take the mantle very soon but in the meantime let's give Westwood some credit. He has rebuilt his game to become one of the most consistent performers on the world stage.

Great fan of Lee but I would like to see him leave his putter in the bag off the green and have some confidence chipping it. I think it has lost him some tournaments if not majors with the change of pace and he comes from the longer grass on to the green.

Sorry but I'm not having it. No one is more patriotic than me and to see a Brit at the top of the world rankings would fill me with pride. Sadly I don't think he deserves it. Yes Tiger has fallen off the pace and we all know why but his record is far and above anything Lee will achieve in golf, for me that's a fact. Come back to me when Westwood has a few (not just one) majors in his collection and I might just conceed he should be No1, till then I don't think it's deserved.

What the hell has the way Westwood conducts himself on and off the course got to do with him being the world number one golfer???!! :D

Christ,David Howell must be in with a chance of being the next number 1.

Woods is the worlds best player because he's been No1 for over 200 weeks thats why, nothing against Westwood but what has he won recently? Look at Mcdowell he's won a major the Welsh Open and today at Valderama surely he should up there not Westwood.

In reality the system is crap and needs changed to give a truer reflection of the game today.

So would you have touted Ben Curtis or Todd Hamilton as world number one for their Open wins?

Westwood has been the most consistent performer in ranking events over two years. Simples.

I think it is testament to his consistency over the last two years. OK he hasn't won any majors but he's been close and that can only help in the future. Other than his majors he's done well in Europe including the win in Dubai and reasonably so in the WGC events if not exactly setting the world alight. Lets not forget it wasn't too long ago that he was down in the 180's in the world so even if it's for one week I don't think there will be another climb back from the depths to the heights

Steve, by your reasoning Westwood can't be No 1 because he hasn't won anything recently. So when did Tiger last win anything? Sometime last Summer? Hardly Number 1 form is it?
