Wishon Irons

I strongly disagree with that, how can you understand what he has achieved without reading his explanation of how he did it! He has produced some very good books on golf club design and how the club design affects performance. Have you read any of them?

Yeah I have and I missed an important word out of my post, the 3rd word 'only'. Brain quicker then the finger on keypad.

I'll start this thread by stating that as a authorised fitter of Wishon, I am biased somewhat.

His equipment is very good. I also fit Miura and Orka, and I don't believe I am overstating it when I say that some if the models are very close in quality to Miura. They are a definite step up from ORKA as well - again, just my opinion based on working with all these brands for over four years now.

In particular, the 919 driver and associated woods and hybrids are excellent. In terms of irons, look at the 560 and the 575 series.

Wishon himself rates the 919 driver and the 560 irons as his best ever heads. That's some statement, again IMHO.

Do you know how much the new 919 Fairway driver heads are ?

Thanks guys.

1 user, 1 fitter, and several with positive comments about Tom Wishon and his clubs/design/history (plus 1 PM - thanks mate).

The reason I asked is that over the last 2 or 3 months I have been thinking about updating the irons that I bought S/H about 12 years ago (X14 firm graphite shaft) and, although possibly one of the best irons Callaway produced, I'm sure that something newer with a more suited shaft would be better for me now.

As luck(?) would have it, I played 18 with a master club fitter the week before last and, as you can imagine, most of the conversation was about custom fitting and club building. Having spent an hour earlier in that week at AG going through the C/F process (I was actually quite pleasantly surprised with the process once the Wilson Staff D1 and unfortunately Yonex had been dismissed) what he was saying during the game was a revelation and not something that the OEM suppliers usually acknowledge.

After the game and lunch, I asked if I could look at his workshop. Although possibly a bit embarrassed as it was more of a mess than my garage, he was willing to show me and 2 other guys around and was quite happy to confirm by demonstration his observations made earlier.

Obviously being L/H somewhat restricts the options of which head is available, but I'm sorely tempted to go with him. Hmmm...... do I go for the Nippon shafts if they suit me best?

Thanks again guys

Hit some Wishon irons at Nickys place (MGL) a while ago, whilst he was fitting my son for some irons
Was very impressed
Good looking
Lovely soft feel
Equal to anything I've tried from the Mizuno / Titleist forged ranges
I wouldn't hesitate to put them in the bag
But my KZG set will take some outing

Wishon is an interesting one. He has strong views on equipment, generally taking a contrary to the zeitgeist attitude, for example that differences in shafts, apart from weight, are of inconsequential importance to most players, that shorter shafts are best and so on. I sometimes wonder whether his business follows his opinions or vice versa.

Anyway, he is one of a number of component club makers who use stuff not from the big manufacturers. KZG, Snakeyes and Dynacraft are all similar brands, and all appear to be good quality if you are fitted properly, insofar as that is necessary per Tom's ethos, into them.

With all these guys, though, and people like Mark Crossfield too, remember that are not independent advisors who reveal the harsh truth that TaylorMade or Titleist know but hide, they are in the business of selling kit too and have to get an angle to do so.

He's actually worked with/for both Dynacraft and Snakeyes, so probably had quite an influence on them! Nakashima is another of the 'sizeable' component makers and pretty good SMT is a smaller one. There are a few in the 'specialist' area too Bang (and a few others) specialise in Long Driver heads; Scratch do wedges and irons and there are loads of Putter specialists!

As an Orka user (irons) I'd be very interested why you think they are not as good? I've found the quality and finish of mine to be as good as any of the top brands.
