Can someone confirm whether its required to mark prior to pick and place ?
One of the guys in the swindle said it was no longer required but I could never find it in a rule booked and couldn't be arsed to argue over this winter.
Ta.

It is no longer required.

However it is advisable, particularly if you walk away from the spot to clean the ball and it avoids arguments about placing too far away from the original spot.

Its one of those situations where you don't need to do something, simply because nowhere in the rules does it say you have to do it. Detractors will always say "show me where it says you don't have to mark!" Answer is, "there's nowhere it says you don't have to - because there isn't anywhere it says you do have to ..."

I always mark my ball to take any question out of it.
Especially in a comp ,we played PL in the first medal of the year Saturday.
Just an unessesary change imo.
If you walk two yd’s to your bag how can you be sure you have placed correctly with no reference.?

How hard is it to mark your ball?
Your bending down to pick it up anyway!
You have to mark on the green and I see no difference on the fairway.

Its what every one does anyway so this just makes it legitimate
Maybe where you play but every group I've played with has always marked before picking up.

A change that I don't see was necessary. How can you pick you ball up with the intention of putting it back within 6 inches/scorecard length or whatever - and no nearer the hole - if you haven't marked it?
Or are the authorities saying that winter golf isn't really golf...

To me whether its a requirement or not, it's good practive to mark before lifting to wipe and place and I don’t intend to stop.

The removal of the reqiurement to mark makes preferred lies consistent with all other situations where you are not replacing your ball. Simplifica

Of course a ball only has to be marked if it to be replaced not if it is to be placed or dropped (elsewhere).

Edit: Colin just beat me.

A big chunk of my post has disappeared. I must have deleted it while editing. It continued to say that the change was a simplification of the rules.

I also suggested that marking or not should depend on the circumstances. If you are just bending down to shift your ball a few inches, marking is a waste of time. If, on the other hand, you are ilfting your ball, going off to your trolley to clean it, wandering over to water a tree and then retuning to place your ball, it is a good idea to have marked it. My record in forgetting which aisle I left my shopping trolley in is too conisistent to expect to to remember where my ball was for more than a few moments.

Do what you feel is right . Just don't preach to others that they should carry on with the old way when it's no longer necessary.

Not that anyone actually bothers to measure to make sure they're placing within 6" etc ;)

Not preaching, just giving an opinion which seems to be the same as wife-beating on here these days...

Not really the point but I know what you mean.

Personal preference only, but l always still mark. Sometimes l pick ball up, just to check if ball is muddy on underside. If not it goes straight back down, and there would have been no need to mark. But if i need to clean it, then marking really is necessary (for me). I struggle to remember where my trollley is, let alone where the ball was.

You don't need to remember where the ball was.....
