Finished todays round and was talking outside the 19th. Apparantly they were discussing winter hcaps which would be differant to summer hcaps. Says it stops the same folk winning every week.
Anyone else play to a winter hcap.

What is a winter handicap, how does it differ from summer handicaps and why should it affect a particular group of players (the ones that are winning every week) more than others?

Pretty sure we get docked two shots for winning and one for runner up. The scores are entered on HDID (when there are enough players) and handicaps adjusted on there. When the season starts up again the handicaps revert back.

Next monday we go onto Winter Tees and teeing up on fairways, all comps through to first weekend in April are non-qualifiers.
Winners are cut 15%, Runner-up 10%, no other cuts or 0.1's.
First weekend in April all handicaps restored to pre winter levels.

we run qualifiers all year round, weather permitting

Same at my club. Never heard of winter handicaps, certainly at any courses around here. How does it work, especially if conditions make the event non-qualifer anyway (temp greens etc). We do play roll ups every weekend, but rarely the same winners week in week out, especially in the lottery of winter conditions

It's quite common at courses that stop running qualifiers but continue to run competitions with any form of prizes...just as in the world of NQ open events through the summer, it's not uncommon for the same individuals to win a disproportionate number of events because their handicap doesn't get adjusted when they win! Some are the perennials, for others it's just a matter of timing where they are new to the game or have worked hard through a Autumn and made a breakthrough.

Thus clubs find their own solutions (in the same way that societies etc)

The local course here in Inversneck used to have winter handicaps a few years ago. Greens on temps on many holes and forward tee's, so a very short course. some where more than 10 shots lower as well which always looked strange on the results. Guys who would be of 20 something in summer and single figures in winter.

no idea how they worked it out and came to those figures

We do it for the winter season when there's no counters on.

With the whites taken in, we play 3/4 handicap from the yellow boxes in stableford. Two divisions, Scr-13, 14-28. Winner gets cut 2 shots, runner-up 1 shot with no increases for also-rans. Seems to work quite well, although it is harder to win in the second div if you're near the cut-line. 2's pot is a drawn hole from all holes where a 2 was made, can be a sizeable bounty.

that Duncan was me last winter and this summer winning during the winter quite well points wise, and winning the summer quite well re finishing in buffer zone. In fact yesterday when I left the course I was winning div 3 with 16 points.
It seems one or two on here like me had never heard of winter hcaps. What do you start off the winter with re hcap? Your summer hcap.

We are now on winter tees and winter rules, which means that the whites have gone, the yellows are reserved for qualifiers and roll-ups and NQ comps are played off the blues, which are just behind the ladies tees. This means that every hole is 30-50 yards shorter than the yellows.

On Tuesday, I won the first Senior stableford with 44 points, the first time I have had over 36 for several months. I now hear that one of the senior committee members is pushing hard to have me cut 3.2. Off the yellow or whites, I would be delighted, but I feel that off blue tees it is unfair, especially as I play in the main club winter comps off the much longer yellows. Can they cut me?

We play 13 holes so its 1/13 your handicap , cut a point if you win , so the next week you shoot 26 your comp score is 25 .. just to keep swinging over the winter .
We have a winter league where all players entered are equally divided into teams & top 6 scores each week contributes to team score , around feb/march the top 8 teams play off .

Bandit season TBH as handicaps revert back when qualifying start & as most of it is placing everywhere & sometimes bunkers are out of play its never considered gor handicap adjustment

No - if they do than you should appeal simply so that they have their responsibilities explained to them by a higher (handicapping) authority. Your steps would start with a written request for a written explanation of why they have made the adjustment.

As Duncan says you need to appeal if the threatened illegal reduction is applied. There is an appeals procedure which should appear on one of the pages on the England Golf website but that page is, unfortunately, blank at the moment. Here is the text for you and anyone else in a similar situation:

CONGU Handicap Appeals Procedure

A member who receives a handicap adjustment under Clause 23 and Clause 24 of the CONGU Unified Handicapping System may appeal against the decision under the following procedure:

Appeal in writing, within 14 days of receipt of notification of the adjustment, to the club Handicapping Committee explaining their reasons for appealing against the decision. If the Handicap Committee do not support the appeal they must send a copy of the player’s playing history (including club match play competition results) a copy of any correspondence between the member and the club and submit these together with the reasons for the adjustment to the County Union/Area Authority for further consideration. The County Union/Area Authority shall then consider all known facts and do one of the following: (i) Write to the club with their decision, plus a copy to the member. (ii) If uncertain submit details of the appeal to England Golf, whose decision shall be final

The County Union/Area Authority shall only overturn a decision made by the club handicapping committee if they consider that the actions of the club were not in accordance with the CONGU Unified Handicapping System or any directive imposed by England Golf.

I checked the England Golf website after Duncan's reply and like you found the page blank. So thank you for detailing the appeals procedure, it could be very useful.
