Winter bag changes

Newbie here, can I ask what is the mat for. Sorry if it is a silly question but I would just like to know.

For winter protection. Different courses have different rules.
At our course you have the option to either hit off a mat on the fairway or move the ball to the rough and hit it from there. The idea is to stop major damage to the course in the winter when the grass doesn't grow fast enough to recover.

I might switch the 4 hybrid for a 3 hybrid to reach our longer par 3's

Willpossibly take out the 3 Hybrid for the 3 MPH 4 when playing on links courses

Some of the better? Courses will not allow you to play the ball off the floor as it can leave massive divots, which are always replaced anyway😜.
so some clubs give players mats about 12" X 6" wide to play off.

other courses have mats spread around the 100 yd marker - towards greens.

Most clubs it the winter now do "pick and place".

I don't tend play too much through winter (Glasgow Parkland course) and will play even less this winter as moving house.

I normally go down to a half bag and try an play the clubs I dont tend to use on teh course (if that makes sense)

3W, 2Hyb, 4, 6, 8, PW and putter

As its only ever a bounce game it forces me to manufacture shots

I change bags to an older Motocaddy which has more pocket room for spare towels and gloves to play in the rain. Clubs stay the same
