Hi all - I've got an away match at Wimbledon Common tomorrow and don't know anything about the course - does anyone know if they sell course guides/strokesavers in the pro shop? I've just checked out the website and it looks like a deceptive little course where I'm likely to try to blaze away and get into trouble. I know that Homer has mentioned things along those lines about it on here in the past. Sounds like there are a lot of short holes with deceptive/strange lines to be taken.

Also, any idea whether they have any warm up nets/putting green etc.?

Cheers

Best tip is not to take it too seriously, you will most likely face a couple of shots around greens that are impossible.

I've only played there in winter opens from the London Scottish side.

I think they have a putting green but i don't recall nets. Stroke savers - dont know.
General comment is for most greens, dont be long. There's usually trouble behind the green quite quickly.

Holes 1-3 what you see is what you get but 2 has a nasty slopey green which generally falls away behind.
Hole 4 - blind par 3. Decent bowl shaped green. Aim only just right of the birch tree on the bank or even over it.
5 & 6 - you see what you get although 6 is another green that slopes to back with trouble quick behind.
7 - sharp dogleg left over the valley. A draw just round the corner will do you nice but fairly straight is ok and you dont need to hit much beyond what you can see. Hole is not that long
8 - long par 3, green slopes away
9 & 10 you see what you get.
11 - tee shot is ok either left or right of the tree. Just left is better - more room for next shot
12 - long par 3 - there's a slope down to the green and another off the back
13 - short without much trouble but woods around green.
14 - plays as a long par 4. You don't want to be too far right off the tee else next shot blocked. Left of centre good.
15 - short par 4 but can't see green. Centre line of what you can see is fine. Slope onto green and then off the back
16 - short par 3. Get it up in the air & over the trees and you're ok
17 - another par 4 where you cant see green. Left of centre of what you see is best
18 - the only par 5. The road/horse ride angles across the tee shot and has nasty rough either side as verges to it. If you're not long off tee, then best to play short of it. More length on left. As long as you're over the bank in two, then you're ok for green in three.

Remember, there's no bunkers but they do have patches of longer grass near some greens instead

Enjoy

And the Wimbledon Common park rangers are the biggest bunch of jobsworths and a-holes I have ever come across. All of them seem to take a perverse pleasure in p***ing off any golfer on the course.

Thanks very much for the time you've put into that and all the other responses - very helpful. Cheers

1st green - horse shoe collar of rough. Long par three so best short and straight and play long chip and run. Slopes back to front and right to left
2nd green had two distinct slopes. If flag is right aim left and it will come in
3rd - the further right off the tee the better the angle in
4th - green slopes back to front
5th - green is bowl shaped. Horse track 40 yard short so second has to carry
6th green - DO NOT GO LONG
7th green - slopes right to left.
8th green - ball will feed left to right. Aim at left side of green. Green slopes left to right and back to front
9th green - another bowl green
10th green - shaded green and slower than looks if flag at the back
11th green - fast running fairway with bank Dow to sunken green. Land short and run in
12th green - sunken green. Tends to be soft. Don't be long as it runs away towards next tee
13th green - another flat green. Will feed left to right
14th green - big bank right and pine trees protect right side. Hit fade for second and use bank to feed in. Tricky green that breaks back to the tee and towards pines
15th green - sunken green. Damp further left on fairway so best to aim right and have better angle in. Don't go long
16th green - will feed in from either side but better coming in right to left
17th green - uphill and half club more than it looks. Ground will take everything right to left so aim right half of green
18th - blind if going for it in two. If not play to top of bank and wide but shallow green. Flat but will move back to front a tad
