Will Westwood win a major?

He has as much chance as anyone else. I mean the famous Rich Beam has one along with numerous others. The world famous putters Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Bernhard Langer and Sandy Lyle have another 11, so why would you have to be a great putter to win one a major. You just have to have a good weekend and having been the world #1 he has had many of them.

The thing is, it's not just on the greens that Lee's weak. It's around them too.
I can't think of a top player who I'd fancy less to get it close from any reasonably difficult position around the green.
For these reasons I say he won't win a major.

Was it me or did he actually look really upset in his interview after as though he'd realised this was a guilt edged chance gone. I wonder why he doesn't bite the bullet and use Stockton or Pelz as they are the recognised leaders in the putting field. Heck why not ask Rotella too. Seemed to help Clarke

Maybe....

Considering how hard he works, it wouldn't harm would it?

Clearly, he's going to take a lot of putts (by hitting lots of GIR) so the "21 putts more than Mickelson" thing doesn't quite add up. His short game seems to be getting more pressure'd every time I watch him play.

Take the 6 he made at the 13th in the 3rd round......?!?

Iain, your spot on about him around the greens, I remember at the WGC Matchplay where he played a chip from just off the green and left it so short even I wouldn't have been happy with it

I think the thing to note is: imagine how much he would win by if his putting improved!

On Sunday, he let 4 shots go where Eagle opportunities ended up as birdies. If he could convert some of those missed putts each time, he would waltz away with victory.

For that reason, I think he will - because he doesn't need to putt well in order to win; he just needs to putt BETTER than he does now. He gives himself so many opportunities that he doesn't need them all to drop - if they did, he'd be out of sight.

He reminds me a lot of Roberto De Vicenzo. both had great swings and strikes, both poorish putters.
Both have good majors record and Roberto won one [and a half] late in his career.

Everyone seems to forget that Westwood also has a reputation for bottling it if he's in front too early as well.

I think he puts too much pressure on himself, and as time goes by, I can only see that getting worse.

So I think he needs to find himself a genuine putting guru ( Peltz? ).

And then get himself 4 or 5 off the lead going into the final round,

then score a one off 64.

That way he wont know he's competing until he's finished his round.

His only chance imo

If Westwood like he says, sorts his short game out. The guys got majors in him for fun.

Best Iron player in the game of golf imo though. Really hope he can sort his putting out.

Good question and I have to say I don't think he will. I class him in the same class as Garcia, put themselves in position on the green but can't close it out. Wonder how long it is till he goes to the belly putter or claw grip, just to freshen it up?

Is it his stoke that is wrong, or is he just a bad reader of the line and pace? It doesn't matter how good you are at executing the stoke, if you've got the line and pace wrong.

he`s done the worst thing u can du and admit he`s not a good putter - his best chance is in america where the greens are a little quicker cause he likes to drop the ball in ...every putt he had on sunday apart from 18 he didn`t have the pace for it to go in ...he fears the one comin back and isn`t aggressive enough ..same at st.andrews in 2010 final round chasing the leader -left every putt short ..yea he putt`s well at times or he wouldn`t be no3 in world .he`s worked with rotella and he says good putting`s all about `attitude`..don`t think he`ll win any majors till that changes ...

Comparing Lees stats at the Masters to Bubba, he hit more GIR (80.56% versus 73.61%) but his putts per green was higher (1.78 versus 1.67) same number of 3 putts at four a piece.

This all boils down to Lee putting once more than Bubba every 9 holes, so 8 putts more in the 4 days. If he'd have managed to hole those he'd have romped it by 6 shots.

His putting may well not be the best part of his game but he's so very close. If he can improve that without losing out elsewhere he'll win a major - I just hope that he doesn't put too much pressure on himself and nor does the rest of the world. He's still an amazing golfer and seems like a really genuine guy.

Or, sinking the eagle putt on 15 followed by the two shorties he missed for par on the front 9, which were all very makeable distances (at least two were gimmes for the average tour golfer). His lag putting touch is actually very good. It's inside 10 feet he struggles. If he can pick up 1 or 2 shots a round here, he'll walk it.

I think admitting it is probably a good thing, I think he's "got by" before, but now really realises how bad it is and that even just slight improvement will mean huge margin of victory at one of these things.

Not a chance ,his short game is shocking for someome of his ability, bite the bullet ask Mickelson for a lesson even Paul Lawrie these guys have short games, never mind these so called guru's ask players, never mind Roe either he won feck all and is a total knob.

Strange thing to say - did Rotella win anything?? Or Pelz?? Great coaches are not necessarily great players.
