Will Westwood be the new Monty?

Totally agree mate,Monty would make up he`s earnings playing in some obscure European Tounament against a field mostly made up of rookies who couldnt get into the big events. Why on earth would somebody who is supposed to be one of the worlds elite do that?.If he was all that he should have played the best tour against the best golfers but we all know why he didnt and thats cos he couldnt handle it and took the easy option.

Now that comment really is the biggest piece of bait you have thrown yet. I'm done biting.

Again I am not knocking his achievement, but he did play in SOME tournaments where there would have been a RELATIVELY week field. He was content to do that for most of the nineties and that's fine, but the players you mentioned earlier such as Faldo,Langer,Olazabal,Woosie all played in the US more. I am not making it a Scotland V England thing because that is pathetic. He was incredible in the ryder cup & I wish he could have got the job done in at leat one major. I always thought he was particularly hard done by in the US PGA when Elkington beat him in a play off.

You really need to do your homework before throwing in stupid comments.

Russell Knox is from Inverness and has full playing privileges on the PGA Tour. The Australian Michael Sim was actually born in Aberdeen.
Who the hell are they? never heard of them and I regularly watch the PGA!!

These would have been the same fields that included wee Westwood, Seve, Faldo, Woosie, Ollie, Greg Norman, Mark James, all complete and utter duffers!

:blah:

Just shows how fickle and naive you are then. The world lives out with England my good man, broaden your horizons and open your eyes, its amazing what you can learn.

Ive got no issues with Scottish golfers at all and backed Lawrie to win the Masters this year and would love to see both Lawrie and Laird in contention for the rest of this years majors, but I think coming on here and down playing Westwoods achievements is not on as he is genuinely so close in lifting a major.I think the guy deserves respect and he doesent seem to be getting that on here.

Im not comparing Scotland v England eitehr as thats a nonsense but to say a man won 8 OOM because the field were weak is shocking. The European tour was very strong in the 90's and I think you'll find Woosnam, Olly and most definately Seve all supported the European tour more than the PGA.

I think we all agree he's a class golfer but opinions vary as to weather or not he WILL win a major thats the difference. Im sure we all would love to see it but I for one think his chance is gone.

What is disrespectful is the playing down of Monty's achievements so I think you are a bit guilty of double standards buddy in your posts on this thread.

He's getting as much respect as a man who has proven he can't finish his diner when it matters deserves. Time and time again he has proven that when the tough get going his putting goes further south than Amundsen ever did!

Westwood is a great ball striker but to sit and blow smoke up his ass is nonsense. He is now on his career slide.

I have consistently said there would have been SOME events he entered that would not have had the likes of Seve,Langer,Faldo etc. He won those OOM's primarily because he is a bloody good golfer. Nowhere have I said that it's souly to do with weak fields every week. When viewing the record of any golfer you have to look at all the facts. The fact is he ruled the ET for most of the nineties. I am just questioning would it have been the same if he had played similar schedules to his piers.AGAIN I AM NOT KNOCKING HIS ACHIEVEMENTS.

It is weak not week by the way.

To be honest I really must question if the men on here knocking what Monty has done are actually educated in the games history or just plain ignorant.

And to answer the opening question, the only way Westwood will ever be in comparison to the great man is when he finishes his career with the same zero major wins as Sir Colin, outside that he his nothing but a pale comparison to Sir Colin.

If anyone takes a look at a list of Monty versus Lee's wins, it is hard not to say that Monty's are a better list of events. OK, Lee won 2 US PGA Tour events, one where Robert Garrigus committed suicide on the last hole to allow him in, and another where he saw off the mighty Steve Flesch, a player nobody here would recognise if he walked into your living room. I wouldn't rate those as more then mid-table in Monty's list of wins.

Monty had legitimate chances at majors on a number of occasions and probably was closer to an actual win that Westie. The 1992 and 2006 US Opens were probably his best chances.

I would not bet my lunch money on Westwood winning a major in his career.

On a personal level, I don't care much for Monty, and like Lee a lot better, but I think Lee is still playing catch-up.

Of course, Westwood never plays against weakened fields? Good win for him last week - here's the top ten he managed to hold off for the victory:

I thik Westwood will win a major and this year - I think its a bit blinkered to say he has bottled it etc. He has come close but not got past the finishing post several times - mainly due to spectacular performances from others.

This years Masters was a step in the wrong direction as it was his to win and he didn't putt well......but he was still only 2 shots off the winner.

Its not like he had a Rory moment and his head went - he kept in the chase but didn't pull it off.

However I do think that he only has this and next season to get it done or it won't happen at all.

Its a real shame that Monty didn't bag a major as I was a big fan of his golf and passion for the game but even he has said that his biggest regret isn'y not getting one but never having been the world number 1. I am not sure if having had the world No. 1 is a help or a hindrence to Westwood as it must bring the 'well he was No. 1 but STILL didn't get a major' worry with it also.

I know it's weak which is why I corrected it in my reply. Is this the way you welcome all newbies?

As for being ignorant. To actually ignore in capitals the fact I am not knocking his achievements. Is that not ignorant? I have been playing & watching the game for around 30 years so know a fair bit about the game & it's history. How about you?

Also at least I know Colin has not been knighted....yet.

Your right mate. Westwood didn't three jab the last green at Turnberry on his own it was due to ................... mmmmmmmm, well, maybe he did actually just gas it BIG time!

Yep. Great win.Seeing off the latest winner on the europen tour!

I think Monty's list of wins are impressive. I just feel he was helped by the playing schedules of others at the time. As I have said repeatedly I am not knocking his achievements & he played some stunning golf over that period.

For not knocking his record your doing a dam fine job of it Faldono1fan!

In fact say it often enough you may actually even start to believe it!. :fore:

I have just read throught all the posts on this thread. I can't believe the insulting things that have been written about two of the best golfers that these islands have produced!

Only four golfers a year will win a major and many of the worlds top golfers never achieve one, both Monty and Lee were well able to win a Major and Lee still is. Most of the postings appear to be on a Scotland v England bias, depending on where the poster comes from. The fact is that winning a Major, whilst singling out a player for greatness, imo doesn't show the lack of a Major as being anything as unable to produce the goods when the there are around 50 of the worlds top golfers at a tournament who can win!

Lets get real, both players are/were awesome and world class
