Both are/were top pro's.
Both have outstanding records and both are true champions.
Monty has 5 runner-up spots in the majors, won 31 European tour titles when all the top European players were concentrating on this side of the pond, and beat top players in the process (runner-up include: Els, Goosen, Langer, Poulter, Westwood, Gargia, Clarke, Harrington, Parnevik etc).
Westwood has 21 European tour titles, 2 major runner up spots, and has ranked no 1 in the world.
Both have terrific Ryder Cup records and have represented GB, & Europe very well.
Both have mainly concentrated on the European tour.
Both have been known to whinge al little too much for my liking.
To be honest I reckon a huge number of golfers would love to be called the new Monty, or the old Westy.

Westwood is clearly a player who could or should win a major. But that doesn't mean he will. Monty could and should have won one, and Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Luke Donald, Paul Casey, Steve Stricker are or were all arguably deserving major winners.
Quite a few perennial contenders won a major late in their careers - Tom Kite, Davis Love etc, but many didn't and some "undeserving" players win a major and reduce the number available for all the "deserving" players.
History will tell us if Ben Curtis, Paul Lawrie, Rich Beem, Shaun Micheel, David Toms, Todd Hamilton, Keegan Bradley, YE Yang, Mark Brooks, Michael Campbell, Steve Jones, Lucas Glover etc will be considered worthy major winners.

Bearing in mind that most Jocks are born with a 7 iron in their hand and that even in the back of beyond, build two houses near each other and a golf club springs up, they don't have that many top class golfers do they??
Exactly they have more opportunities than most to have elite players but it just doesent happen..........As for the Open this year Westwood will be in the top 5 and Monty will be sitting at home watching it on tv dreaming about what could have been obviously not being bothered about never being a major winner of course
......

I would agree with that 100% there is a distinct lack of Scottish talent on tour. Guys like Forsyth (2 victories) Warren (2 victories), Gallacher (1 victory), Ramsay (1 victory) have not pushed on like they should.

When i was growing up it was still a sport for snobs, yes i shared a bag of clubs with friends the usual 2 woods and 3 irons and a putter but all we played was a 9 hole pitch and putt course in Bathgate called Balbardie, so because the game has flourished outwards from Scotland do not assume we were all golf mad.

I'm not assuming anything. But to be fair, most decent sized villages/towns in Scotland have a 9 hole golf course nearby. Some of them are stunning. Golf is/was far more accessible up there than it ever has been down here. So it stands to reason that a greater pecentage of the population got to whacking a ball around, surely???
My original question was "Is Westwood the new Monty" meaning is it possible that Westwood will be a loser also and not win a major.But then the trolls on here just took a swipe at Westwood(ex world no1)which I felt was very unjust and people since have reduced my thread to stupidity!
