Will Rory repeat?

Just had a look at the records and winning any Major in successive years is a rare feat. Since WW2 only Hogan and Curtis Strange have sucessfully defended the US Open.

So it's a tough task for anyone irrespective of their form or ability.

Recent Majors have thrown up a few surprise winners. There's a lot of good players around and the guy mentioned above - Jason Dufner - has shown how someone relatively unknown can suddenly emerge from the pack to be a tour winner and a Major contender. He looks a cool customer and a solid player. For me, heart says Westwood or Mickelson but head says it'll probably be a someone we didn't expect....or Jason Dufner.;)

As for Rory, who knows what the future holds. Who would have thought that Sergio with all his ability would be without a Major 13 years after dueling with Tiger in the PGA Championship. Rors could win a hatful or never win another. That's the great thing about sport and golf in particular, it is so unpredictable.

I dont understand where people are coming from when questioning Rorys's form this year. Look at his record this season. There isnt many better.

I agree it is a tough task but I believe the fact that he is going back to as defending champ will focus his mind. I am thinking he should do well, hope he does anyway.

Except all that finished above him and have won things, and made all the cuts...

He has been up there challenging in almost every tournament he has been in and there isnt many if any players on tour this season who can say that. Usually when he has played he has come close to winning.

I can't believe anyone is questioning Rorys form so far this year. Played 8 events, 1 missed cut, 1 tied 40th and 6 top fives including a win and three 2nd place finishes. Horribly inconsistent that. 203 Ranking points this year alone, more than anyone else.
I doubt he'll win the US open back to back as this is so hard to do, but I believe he will be in the running.

I'm puzzled with the "Rory is off the rails" thing too. I would need to look it up, but the only cut I can recall he's missed is TPC which he's NEVER faired well in.

He won the Honda Classic and has be there or there abouts in most other tournaments he's played in. He was close to winning a WGC only losing out to Mahan who has been in superb form at the start of this season and has had a few sunday surges up the leaderboard, but has fallen just a bit short. There's probably a few guys with better records on tour, but he's hardly gone off the rails and let the fame get to him, that, IMO is a ridiculous statement. We're not even in June and he's being written off, which I find pretty weird.

Ah, there you go! thanks for that. Facts! to back up my rambling! :D

Usually when he has played he has come close to winning.

But, with the exception of one, hasn't won. I don't believe the intention of this thread was to question whether we think he will come close to winning the US Open...
It's about opinion and I've given mine, there is no right or wrong answer IMO, just a load of opinions based on what people have seen. And I don't think he will win it. Seemples.

Thats fair enough but suggesting he has been inconsistent is ridiculous. Anybody questioning whether he has had his head turned are very wrong as well imo.

As is that fair enough. By inconsistent I meant that has started tournaments well but has not maintained the performance and this is why IMO he hasn't been winning. I should have clarified that rather than made a sweeping statement.

I would need to go check to be sure but I am pretty sure that in some of this years events he has started weak and come strong at the end, but has just left himself too much to do.

Not the ones I have been watching on the tellybox. Printed stats are amazing at telling you a different story though. And on that I am qualified to make that statement.

Scores are scores. Omega Dubai Desert Classic is the only one were obviously scored worse at the weekend, other than the Honda which he won anyway. At the Cadillac, Wells Fargo and Abu Dhabi his weekend scores were stronger than his early rounds. I have watched the events on the telly too, but am coming away with a different perspective. Certainly in previous years weaker finishes were something Rory was prone to but I do not believe that to be the case now.

I didn't really believe the "he's not taking it seriously enough" argument until just now.

He's 8 over for the day but i just saw him laughing and joking with Ernie Els. Can't see Tiger being that happy with 8 over!

He has the talent to dominate, but it seems not the attitude.
