I enviously read on here about clubs with weekend roll ups so why do they seem to not exist anywhere near me.

All the clubs I know locally (Belton Park, Belton Woods, Stoke Rochford, Stapleford Park, Greetham Valley, Rutland Water) to name a few have either general play at a weekend or competitions, no roll ups at all and I am wondering why not. I have contacted my club about it but there was little encouragement for me or anyone else to start something. Is this normal.

Got to the stage where if I could find a club within half an hour or so with weekend roll ups and drawn comps so as I could feel part of a club rather than being a member of somewhere I go to play golf then I would consider a move.

Apologies for this but it comes up every so often. What is a roll up in golf terms?

It's an informal gathering where people usually put a couple of quid into a pot and winner takes all or it's split 1st/2nd/3rd etc. The idea is it's not formal and people don't need to commit to playing every week. Balls are usually drawn out the hat so you play with different people each week and it has a very inclusive feeling.

Great for newbies when they join a club

My club has roll ups of sorts, but they are a bit cliquey. Essentially it's the same big groups of mates turning up on a Saturday morning at the same time. It's not open to all comers.

The type the D4S describes above sounds great for newbies. If I were to move club it would be a pre-requisite.

As said, I asked but the club seemed very reticent for anyone to do that at weekends

do you have tee times booked at your club? all you need is for a group of people to have tee times booked in a row (Say 4), and you agree to draw playing partners in the group.

The club would even know about it?

Nairn has a roll up slot at 9 and 12 on comp days for guys with no reg playing partners in non drawn comps and there a few more informal groups as well.

There is a Monday/Wednesday/Friday group. Mostly retired and shift/offshore workers, you just turn up and pick a number and the weekend there are a few groups of mates that just meet up and draw balls most would let anyone play with them.

why not just start one of your own?

How far are we from you?

All weekend (95% Saturday) comps are drawn, and there are usually a couple of roll ups on a Sunday.
The only comps that aren't drawn are the 12 midweek ones played from April - September where you just turn up, register, and away you go.

1 play for a tenner (I think) each with back 9, front 9, overall, a ntp and a long drive, but it's usually the same people each week.
The other is really easy to get a game with and more of a social thing. They don't play for money but just have a different fun comp each week.

Thanks for that. My old club used to play one on a Monday night but it was known simply as a sweep rather than a roll up. Same thing though from your description. Very popular, relaxed 9 hole comp.

A good idea but as others have mentioned it is important that cliques don't appear. Ours started off as inclusive but over the years people would only play with their mates so whilst it was fun still it was no longer the all friendly idea that it was meant to be.

We have roll ups both days at Woodhall.

Ours on a Sunday is a reasonable £3, we have a set of 25 lads who play and we roughly have 12-16 each week turning up.

I find it strange that clubs don't have roll ups, ours is a great way to meet new members and we do drawn tee times for comps for that reason, playing with the same people week after week doesn't help any new members.

We have roll ups every day of the week and every one is welcoming to anyone

On Saturday my lot meet at 06:30 the tee off once we all know how many are there

Then you have groups go off at 07:30 and then every half or so

Then we meet at the same time on the Sunday and there is another 3 roll ups behind us

There is one every morning during the week - also one every Monday and Wed at around 9:45 then during the summer months a few start at 4 pm to 5 pm

Every roll up organiser gets the nod when a new member has arrived and is looking for a game

Greg, just put a notice on the board in the gents locker room and ask for one to put in the ladies room too, choose a time and stick with it. As Ray Kinsella said 'Build it and they will come' (Field of Dreams)

We have roll ups most days, including the weekends. The club have said they must be open to all but in reality one or two remain very much closed shops and very cliquey. That said the weekend ones I play in have been very good at providing new players with a regular game with most of the "faces" at the club

I think these have their place and I think the OP perhaps needs to drive this a bit more and get notices up, maybe something on the club website and persuade the club and the members that it's worth doing. I hope in his case it works and takes off

Aye haha, the book of "members of xyz" "associate members" and whatever other categories there are in one of them.

Where I am at now you get an information pack when you join and one of the pages has all the roll up times on it, think there are 3 weekend ones. Think there are some more informal ones as well on top of that

Roll ups/sweeps can be great but sometimes you have an extra hour or so to hang around the club waiting to go out.

I used to play a Saturday morning where meet at 815 for a draw/first tee 830. Could be over 20 folk there and if you got the last game you were hanging about waiting for all the other games to go. You could just as easily get the first game but I don't that remember that happening to me much lol.

My current sweep in now an afternoon and suits me much better.

There are also a number of other sweeps during the week that I could happily turn up and get a game the same as any other members.

Likewise at Elsham. There's 3 on a Saturday 8.00, 8.30 and 1.00pm and one on a Sunday and a lunchtime one on most midweek days too.
