Why does it feel so wrong to cut a new grip off a club?

Encouraged by reading various threads on here, in the last few weeks I have fitted a new putter grip, and then some new grips to my irons.

Faced with re-gripping my ageing wedges, I ended up buying new ones (well they were bargains), but as I have been using oversize grips recently I think I should replace what came on them.

Cutting the worn out grips off the putter and irons was fine, but am finding it hard to make the move against the new grips.

I think some people/pros may be able to remove them in tact with air, but then what would I do with them. I know they only cost a few shekels. I know I should just crack on.

Tough question as it's the only contact with the club and you have to feel comfy with it in your hand and confident. Are you going to do that with the new grips. Personally I'd want all my grips (bar putter which is clearly individual) to be the same and feel the same size so I'd have no issue doing whatever was necessary to make that happen, whether that was losing new grips or not

I don't have this issue as I blow mine on and off as and when required... :thup:

You can get the grips off with something long and thin to slide down the grip and just keeping dripping white spirit in the gap and working around and down.

I have mid size grips on my irons and the gap wedge that comes with them.

I am reluctant to change my sand wedge and lob wedge to mid size.

Purely incase i lose the touch and feel i have with them.

Probably wouldnt make one iota of difference but thats how i feel.

Agreed, it feels wasteful to chop off a perfectly good grip just to change it.

If you are friendly with your local pro, ask him to syringe the grip off.

This is a bigger problem when you decide to try a fat putter grip, decide you don't like it & want the old one back. It's a good idea to get the grip off intact because they do have a resale value.

How do you do this? I've seen a video of a professional machine which does this but it looks expensive.

Having access to the required equipment (compressor etc) is obviously a key factor, lucky for me I have all I need in the workshop at work but really it's just a piece of plastic pipe just big enough to slide over the grip and about 10-12 inches long and one of those little hand held air-gun/blower things, the one with the needle extension on it works best as you can slide it into the end of the grip making a good seal...

Please bare in mind that I used to work for 'ATS' as a tyre fitter for a good few years so know my way around air-lines, compressors and the like and also the dangers that compressed air brings with it...

Other than that it's real easy... :thup:

A foot pump works just as well.

I blow mine off - sometimes it works some times it does not. Depends on the quality of the tape and the age of the grip.

It is advisable to have a tube round the grip as they can balloon and I have had a coupled that have burst.
