Why does everyone hate so called big hitters?

I'd say I'm in the top 10% of longer hitters but nowhere near the top. Not many people consistently blast it 60yds past me but i seem to do that to others quite frequently.

Played yesterday with the forum boys, put one out at 285yds (12th) and one at 275yds (14th) into an upslope, both GPS'd, not bad for Winter as both would have made it past the 300yds in the Summer.

On the flip side I hit one off the heel that flew 20feet off the ground straight into a bunker at 210yds (11th) and one off the toe that went 240yds (16th)

If I average those yardages it comes in at 252yds, the duffed ones really knock back your average!!!

In this country (soft courses and bad weather) I think we are fooling ourselves if we think someone can CONSISTENTLY average 300yds but there's definitely people out there who can MURDER THE BALL in the right conditions.

Really good players don't duff their tee shots so I expect there are a lot out there who can average 270, 280 or even possibly 290yds. In the USA where conditions appear more favourable most of the year I expect there's loads of them.

I'm in a similar position to you, there are 2 people at my club who consistently knock it past me. I've just had a look at my Sky Caddie statistics and my last 20 rounds comes up with an average of 285.24 yards bear in mind I stop putting any scores/stats on once we start winter golf.

At a recent Ping fitting my carry was anywhere between 270-280 yards with my new driver, which was pretty much spot on for lauch angle and spin rates. But I still doubt very much I'll average 300 yards come the start of the season.

The 2 people I do know who I would say average 300 yards plus are a previous pro golfer. A golf magazine did an article about him when the first Callaway Big Berthas were released, where he was driving our 12th hole with various drivers which is 350 yards long. We also have another bloke who plays off 3 and I've never seen anyone hit it as far as him. He carries a blade 1 iron which he hit's as far as I hit my driver.

I'm not saying I average 300 yards, only that I know 2 people who can/do.
 
Blah blah blah I can hit it 300 yards on average. If you can back that up with consistent scores in the 60's then fair play. If you can't then get to the short game area.
 
i never measure how far i hit it and have an SG5 so could easily but dont see the point

tbh i really dont get why ppl go on about it anyway

unless its in a longrest drive comp surely the only distance you really need to worry about is...

...how much futher to the hole!

dont look back at whats done, concentrate on what you still have to do!! ;)

Wasn't having a go at you at all mate. I think the issue of possible "over optimistic" launch monitors etc was put to bed a while ago. For whatever reason, the thread was hijacked by the 300 yd brigade.

My post was merely to highlight that very few pros at the height of their game can average 300yds whilst still keeping the ball on the fairway or near it.

I fully believe the newbie who says that he knows many amateurs who consistently average 300+ yds. I seem to remember a while back we had someone similar on the Forum who was going on ad nauseum about long driving comps.

Not in my opinion it wouldn't. I've re-read this thread again basically you are saying there are amateurs "averaging" 300 yards. Whilst I can't prove otherwise I'd be as sceptical as the majority on here but even if you could prove otherwise why would it make an interesting article. All it says to me is you know some long hitters. Big deal. Do they win tournaments? Can they shoot low scores? Surely the idea of the game is to get it round in as few as possible.

There are a number of top pros who are not long hitters and they seem to make a more than reasonable living and win events. Power is a nice to have but not a pre-requisite to shooting low scores.
 
There are people who can hit 300 yards here.
There are people who can not hit 300 yards who say they can.
There are those who have hit 300 yards with the wind behind.
There are those who do not hit the ball a long way and there defence is that they have a great short game.

You all sound like you have small manhood. If you can then good, if you cant, unlucky but golf is mesured in handicap. Its cool to talk about it but wow alot of people turn into dicks when it comes up.
 
I've just re read this thread and there seem to be about four conversations going on! For those wanting to know what's going on, in summary:

The OP felt he had received unfair flak because of the yardages he quoted when taking about a positive fitting.

The sceptics say they are bored of those who come on here talking about being big hitters.

The believers then started listing all the peeps they have met that can average 300 yard drives saying it's perfectly possible for a single figure or higher handicapper to be a big hitter.

The doubters then retorted that although possible it's highly unlikely and if they hit it that far they should sort out their short game. With the cynics rounding the whole thing off by saying they would rather be an accurate short hitter anyway.

As for me. I hit it a pretty long way, I have had my club choice/yardage mocked on here. I'm not really that bothered if people think I'm a liar. I'm long but not very accurate. My short game's pap. I don't have a driver. I can carry my 3 wood over 300 yards. But I prefer to use a trolley. :D

I have seen them all (at sometime or another) collar the ball 300 yards.
But I wouldn't put a bet on them following it up on the next hole as well.

Totally agree. I've played with all three and will vouch for what Smiffy said. All can spank it miles but none of them would ever " "average" " 300 yards because they don't hit everyone of them perfectly (and in some cases even find it again)
 
I played a Matchplay against a guy from another club years ago. He was looong. Couldn't measure it - GPS hadn't been invented but he was certainly 70-80 yards past me and I was a steady 240-250ish (paced!). Trouble was he couldn't hit any shot other than full out. We had a 500 yard par 5 and he played driver, wedge and went through the back! Insanely long, but no control. I played driver, 3 iron(told you it was years ago!) and eagled it.
I won easily.
Someone said earlier that it doesn't matter how far you hit it. It's how far you've got left that matters and how many it takes to cover that distance.

Golfstick, I wasn't haven't a go at you pal, I was more questioning the results of the custom fit data.

I couldn't care if you hit it 30 yards or 300 yards.

My concern is that the custom fit data is rigged in such a way that the potential purchaser believes that the Driver/s he's testing will make him a super hitter.

Reading this has brightened up my day after being back at work!!

I am by no means a long hitter I don't think (never been on any measuring things). 300 yards is a long way to average, if folk can do it good luck to them, rest of their game must be pretty pap if they don't have a birdie putt at every hole.

Think thats the point all who can knock it out there can just as easily knock it 300 yrds into the crap aswell. :D
