Why does everyone hate so called big hitters?

I looked at those stats on the last willy waving thread. tour average is 282. and we all see how deep those guys hit it especially if you go and watch an event i reckon the biggest of club golfers will still be 40 behind an average tour pro.

For me a big hitting club golfer will be 240 - 245.

well im only 5 yards behind being a winter big hitter, lovely jubley :D

Screwback,

Why would a low handicap club golfer not be able to hit the ball as far as a pga pro?

The reason the guys are pros is because they score well and have pretty much mastered all aspects of golf. Tour pros are ridiculous with wedges, putters, bunker shots, iron shots, strategy and driving all aspects.

There is nothing to prevent say a 2 handicap golfer hitting the ball 300yards ON AVERAGE whilst not being quite pga standard with, irons, wedge and putter.

Surely you must agree?

Or

Is it the case that this 2 handicap example averages 250 sharpens up all other areas to the point required to hit the tour and automatically gets longer as he is now a pro?

Lets not get carried away here,a lot of players hit it miles, but an average 300 yarder would have to hit some 340 and then some 260 to average 300.Your post says everybody hates big hitters, definately not true. The fact is we can all hit a shot a long way,but its the inconsistency.I have been on two forum meets and both longest drives were 260-270,pieman hit it 300 but it was in the thick rough,no good to anyone.Lets just see when the next forum meet comes up who the big hitters are,and pieman is a top bloke so i like him not hate him because hes a big hitter.

Here we go again.

The true fact is that anyone coming on here saying they average 290 plus yards is lying no matter whether they are off 28 or plus 1.

I have played with umpteen top amatuers and none, absolutely none would come close to having that average....none.

I reckon the statistical odds of averaging 300 yards are probably similar to achieving a plus 3 handicap

Very rare but certainly in existence

But the odds of over estimating are about the same as having a 28 handicap

Meaning, even the guy who is that rare as a plus 3 handicap golfer and does average 300, will think he averages 320!

When in reality the plus 3 man actually averages 270.

Stating the above as a fact is just plain wrong! Its rare yes but some ams to hit that far, just because you have not met any does not mean they do not exist.

Are you talking about club golfers who contribute to forums or kids who are working their way through County and National coaching programmes and play full time golf on their way to joining the Tour?

Over the years i've played with some very big hitters including a couple Tour players and yet to meet anyone who averages 300. A few members at Goswick can drive the first green, 320 yards from the back tee. But none of them would claim to average 300 yards.

I completely agree with Dodger. I have never come across an amateur golfer that averages anywhere remotely close to 300 yards off the tee. If they exist, they are the exception that proves the rule.

I disagree with those who say that length off the tee counts for little and it is all about short game etc. That is just not true. Like most things in life, you need to have balance in your golfing attributes. You won't get to category 1 unless you can give the ball a good whack, keep it in play and chip and putt a bit. All facets of the game need to be good, not least course management.

I am talking about anyone that is not a pga pro!

Whether they are scratch or 15 handicaps is not the issue.

I know guys that average 300yards and are not on tour, if you state its a FACT that this is rubbish then the only FACT is you are wrong!

Simples

Again, you might play golf for 30years lets say, but you only meet a small number of golfers!

There in excess of 5 million golfers in the UK.

Lets say you meet 50,000 so a football stadiums worth, you met 1% of golfers in your life do you think that amongst these the longest hitters must appear?

How many plus 3 handicappers would you get in your stadium of 50,000 golfers? 1 maybe zero?

They still exist though, right?

I hope you see my logic here!

You know what they say about Statistics..............

I do,

But I also happen to know personally amateurs that do average 300.

Now do you think if you went to 100 football stadiums each packed with 50,000 amateur golfers that you might not find a few that averaged 300 yards?

?

Nowhere was it suggested these guys are everywhere, but anyone denying this and calling it a FACT cannot see beyond their own experience.

Golf Monthly should do an article!

I will find the guys and they can then do an article

"Fact or Fiction" The 300 yard average amateur!

It would be a damn popular article given the reponse on threads on forums!

Ok

Not sure how you fixed my post?

This forum has 8,000 registered users

less than 0.16% of uk golfers

OR

for every golfer on here there are more than 625 not on here!

So, I know I am right and you may believe I am wrong, the difference is I have first hand experience of golfers who do hit this far whearas you do not.

I think GOLF MONTHLY should cover this!
MY PMs are on if they want to do this thing!

Actually that would be a fascinating article. The problem is that I suspect not many people who claim to average 300 yards off the tee would be willing to be measured officially. It might dent a few egos!

A friend of mine is a huge hitter...I'm certain that he can knock it over 300 yards when he really catches one. Even his mishits go a lot further than my Sunday Best, although I would say I'm a short hitter. I played foursomes with this guy and even I was hitting half shots into several of our par-4s of 350-400 yards. (Bad course management, eh? ;))

If you are one of the few who do hit it out there, you are going to meet with a lot of cynicism until guys see you do it. There are too many telling porkies.

Is the correct answer.
;)

well I did it, didn't I smiffy

just the once though :o

I can hit it over 300 yards too............. just got to hit it more than once, sometimes more than twice to do it.......... :)

I could organise 3 lambs to the slaughter OR NOT depending on who is correct!
