Why do we use a glove?

when i started playing i wore a glove,i did for about four years ,then for some reason i stopped using one for a few rounds when i went back to trying a glove again it just felt so wrong .so for the next ten years didnt wear a glove.
however.... i gave the game up for 18 years and when i came back to it i just started wearing a glove again, trying to not wear one now feels wrong.
contrary bugger aint i.

If I don't use a glove I feel like I have to grip firmer with my left hand, which results in my left wrist being far too rigid and I hit everything with an open clubface.

I like a nice black leather glove so that when I answer a call of nature in the woods it feels like I'm bring helped by a lady. - Sorry!

I tend to get blisters on my left hand if I play and practice a lot and don't wear a glove. Otherwise it's just something we have copied from the tour pros I suppose!

I wore a glove when I started, and then wondered why I was wearing one - and so I stopped.

I now swear by rain gloves when they are needed, but still never wear one otherwise. So I never, ever wear a glove now - just a pair of them when necessary.

As I understand it, it's nothing to do with grip or protection for the hands. I read somewhere that its something about if you put a thin layer between the grip and your hand you tend to grip with less pressure, which benefits the swing... Or something like that - but I might be wrong.
I have been playing with one for so long now, it feels weird without, but I only use around 5 a year, all weather Mizunos £15 for 3.

When i started, i got a free glove with the starter set, plus everyone else used one and didn't know any better.

Just used to it now

Scientific test:

Next time you cant get the lid off a jar, don't take it to the wife for her to do it, just pop on your golf glove and you'll get it open due to the superior grip you now have

Proof positive that it does indeed increase the grip by a factor of 3.8

Warning: Caution required with beetroot jars

I wear titleist players gloves at £18 each. I guess I use one a month. I try to go naked in the winter, as once I stop having sweaty hands, they aren't really necessary.

Thats ridiculous.

something i learnt on a Footjoy/GM day earlier this year is that the tolerances between the Players Glove and the Footjoy SciFlex is indentical and made from exactly the same leather (pittards).

Save yourself £7 a pop!

This is true.......and all players with metal grips on their clubs should definitely wear a glove to increase grip. However, for those with rubber grips.........

That's fine but you don't need to grip a club that tight.

I have found no difference at all at the moment in todays conditions, however in the summer when my hands are sweaty could be different.

Whenever I hit a full shot without a glove, either because I simply forgot to put it back on or because I left it in my bag and am too lazy to go back and get it, I instantly regret it. I find it actually hurts my hand. And the glove never bothers me makes me feel like I have less control. I sometimes take it off for putting, but most of the time I don't even bother to do that and leave it on all through the round.

Have used Cabretta sof for a couple years now - get 3 for £15 and one normally lasts me a month - nice a soft

In most people the left hand is the weaker, which is a shame because it's the one that needs to grip the club the firmer of the two. I'm left handed & & didn't wear a glove for over 40 years. As I got older I found that my grip was getting weaker, touch of arthritis in the hands. I started to wear a glove & it has helped a lot. What I have found is that the type of grip with a glove on is less relevant. I had some Golf Pride Supertack grips fitted a couple of years ago. Without a glove they feel much better than standard non cord grips. With the glove on I can't feel any difference, grip is much, much better with the glove on & I wouldn't be without it now. Always remove it for putting but never between shots.

I didn't for many years - then one day someone said to me 'you should wear a glove' - so I bought one and have worn one ever since - though I take it off for putting.

I use the titleist players glove and it probably lasts me around 12-14 rounds. I use a cheaper glove at the range.

When I first started playing they used to go on my small finger but I think that was due to a bad grip.

I always put the glove back in its plastic pouch when I have finished as it will dry out and loose it's shape otherwise. I also swap it for a mac wet if there is a hint of rain.

Seems to work for me.
