Why did I sell it

Just come Back to the hotel and walked past where the 220 was. It was out the back. Anyway in its place was an Opel GT two seater. It was gorgeous. Apparently they only built them for two years and I cannot find if they were released under the Vauxhall badge.

A guy at the end of my road has a black WRX STi with the gold wheels. It’s ok, I think it’s a car that, like the EVO 8, I thought was the coolest when I was in my 20s but see them as a bit OTT now.

The guy from my street always tries to race me when he sees me out and about. And I always just think, aye nay bother pal ?
Blue with gold wheels for me. I'm now in my 50s but I would still love to see this on my driveway...

Either my 1972 TR6, my 1974 Austin Maxi 1750, my 1978 Alfasud Ti or my 1986 MG Montego Turbo.
What did you reckon to the MG montego. I had a MG midget, went to an MG owners meeting one day and MG had a stand with the MG metro and Maestro. The purists were livid with a badge going on them ?

We can only hope none of them lived to see the current line up...

The reason that most of you sold your 'dream' car was that it was turning into a nightmare - too big/small, too expensive, too unreliable, too rusty, etc. ;) If it was still great you wouldn't have sold it.
More sentimental rose coloured glasses, I suspect.

Can you tell I am in the "cars are for getting from A to B" camp? Or just jealous I haven't had a great car?

I had two Montego Turbos and a Montego EFi, (and a Maestro EFi).
The turbos were mad.
The fastest 2 litre saloon car in the world when it first came out, shortly to be outdone by the Sierra Cosworth.
The acceleration was superb ............................... the torque steer was horrendous!
I had to have new front wheel bearings every six to eight weeks as they were the same as on a Maxi.
I'd have my MKI version back in a heartbeat.

We had an MG ZT-T. I really liked it. Handled well and pretty rapid.

What the heck is the Austin Maxi doing amongst those! Even the Montego is a bit iffy imo!
The TR6 certainly belongs though. Just watching one seem to 'sit down' under acceleration was always a joy!

Ah, the Maxi.
Simply way ahead of it's time with prehistoric build quality.
One of the most useful cars I've ever owned.
Oh, how people laughed .......................... until they needed to move a fridge or a sofa!

Similar to SILH the biggest car regret that I have was not buying my mates Mk1 Golf GTi when he got rid of it. I absolutely loved that car. In a gorgeous dark metallic blue with the pepper pot wheels.

He'd retrofitted electric windows and a decent sound system as well.

We fell out of touch for a couple of years and when we reconnected I asked him about it he told me he'd sold it to a bloke in Edinburgh for £800. I could have cried.

I'm in the same camp as you with thinking they are simply tools to to get from A to B, and hopefully back to A again.

Let's play a game of crap car top trumps. I'll go first. My car history to date is......

A turquoise Vauxhall Astra. Followed by a maroon Renault 21 (the only redeeming feature of it was I was given it free by my grandfather when he gave up driving). Then a blue Nissan Primera. Grey Renault Grand Scenic. White Vauxhall Zafira (still got it as Mrs Colch's car and to tow the caravan). And my current car a blue Ford C-Max (another free one, this time when my dad gave up driving).

I've never sold a car that I've bought for anyone to continue using, all the ones that I've gotten rid of were run into the ground and sold as scrap, apart from the Nissan which was written off when I drove it into a metal fence, and then sold as scrap. Has anyone got a worse car history than that?

My first drive was my dad’s Mk2 Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia (was given to my sister); then dad bought my brother and I a Simca 1000 Rallye to learn to drive in (I wrote it off before i had passed my test); then came my Mk3 Ford Escort Ghia…loved it until written off by my wife. Then a Ford Sierra 2000 (fast) and then maybe four or five Rover 200s and 400s; three or four forgettable French cars; couple of run of the mill BMWs. Most recent before my current Golf was a Nissan Qashqai which I liked and a couple of run around Polos.

So as you see…not a lot to swank about.

Now if only I had bought that Peugeot 205 GTI back in 1984 my car history might have been very different.

Subaru, of all styles, were remarkably popular in NZ back in the day - even before Possum Bourne threw one around so well!
Still hear (first) and see quite a few WRXs about, so reliability must have been pretty good too.
