Why did I sell it

Surprising, when it was around at the same time as the Focus RS, Golf GTi mk5 and Civic Type R. Perhaps he never drove them.

He tested the MG in 2001... So a bit early for the Focus and Golf Mk5 I think? From memory didn't the civic type R always understeer like a banshee?

I know he was working for Top Gear at the time so had access to most cars I think.

My only 'car regret' was and remains the car I was going to buy; really wanted to buy - but didn't. It would have been my first car - and as I was earning a good salary for my first job in 1984 it was to have been a Renault 205 GTI. And I think I would still miss it if I had bought it.

Instead? On a visit to Glasgow that year my dad persuaded me to buy an almost new Mk3 Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia. Truth is - I really liked it, but it wasn't the Renault 205 GTI I rather craved. I had that Escort for many years - and I missed it when it was written off after a crash in 1992.

I think you mean Peugeot?

Do you mean Peugeot 205 GTi? Renault 5 GT was the other French hot hatch.

My best car so far was the mark 5 Golf GTi. Cracking fun car, until it needed a few grands worth of work. I work out in the sticks so get to use hot hatch's in their favourite playground.

Subaru Legacy mk IV estate. Not the flashiest spec or biggest engine but nothing I've owned sat on the road like it. Something about the combination of the boxer engine, 4 wheel drive & the smoothest slush box I've ever used that meant it drove beautifully & suited me down to the ground. Sold on the advice of the financial adviser as part of the retirement plan. :( Would have replaced it with another but for the CVT gearbox on the new ones.

Honda Prelude, 2.2 .
Lovely car, 4 wheel steering, when my company moved site had to get a more sensible car to commute in ☹️
I knew a guy who had one and he was also a fan of them - until it got stolen!
Surprisingly sporty performance for such relatively subdued styling.
My favourite was the 2nd A5 Diesel I had (1st being the crossover model). Had it 'chipped' for a bit of extra grunt. Nice looking, comfortable to drive the long distances I frequently did - and reliable. Detraction was VW/Audi service costs...exorbitant, even after experiencing BMW ones!

...
The Renault 5 GT was an insane car, so fast for being so small.
Indeed they were. I remember seeing one for a few seconds on several of my weekly returns home from Southend - at least I think it was the same one, as I never really got the chance to check the plate!

The only car I was sad to let go of was my gold-wheeled Subaru Impreza WRX STi, in metallic grey. Around 300 bhp and rapid! Was doing too many work miles, thus had to be replaced by a 1.9TDi Audi. ;)

I know that when my current car goes, that will be hard. Unless I keep it

I'd love one of them... Not the Audi.

A guy at the end of my road has a black WRX STi with the gold wheels. It’s ok, I think it’s a car that, like the EVO 8, I thought was the coolest when I was in my 20s but see them as a bit OTT now.

The guy from my street always tries to race me when he sees me out and about. And I always just think, aye nay bother pal ?
