Hi,

Got a little debate going on with my old mate Oddsocks. Now I've been saying to him, a person of 6 ft 1, shouldnt be playing with standard lenght and lie irons, before he even gets on to what shaft he should have to give him a lower trajectory.

So I'm 6 foot and when fitted, I was advised my lie was between 1 and 2 degrees upright, went for 1 deg as 2 seemed a little wierd and if I wanted 0.25 of an inch longer shaft.

So what's your height and what lies and shaft lenght were you recommended?

I was fitted for my Ping Irons and Rescue. Cant remember the exact specs but all the loft and lies were altered from standard, grips were thickened and shafts were extended. I am a tad under 6ft3" tall and with me being custom fitted I can still shank 1 into the trees on the left:smirk:

I'm 6ft tall and have been custom fit. Because I have fairly long arms (like a baboon) it suggested that I have shorter shafts but the feeling was that it may upset the balance of the clubs as well as their resale value. I was decided that I have standard length but grip a little further down the shaft.

Shaft length will depend on the wrist to floor measurement. If he has long arms, then standard is easily possible. Same with lie, as static address with low hands may need a flat lie. Obviously this has to be checked with dynamic strike board to check lie at impact. And it varies between manufacturers... In summary there's not definite right or wrong, but as you get taller it follows that longer shaft and more upright is favoured.

So what's your height and what lies and shaft lenght were you recommended?

I'm 6'2" and 0.5 inch longer in shaft. Was 2° upright with Cleveland (old bats) now playing standard lie with Mizuno.

As said in the other thread, my irons are +0.5" and 1* upright.

Edit: - 3 layers of tape under the grips & Nippon N.S. Pro 950Gh shafts.

I'm 6' tall.

I got fitted for irons, wrong heads and shaft imo even though the stats were ok, just!

after 2 weeks of worse performance over my old set I refitted myself by trying what I liked and found I suited even heavier and much stiffer shafts. Fitter also said standard loft lie and grips, did it myself and went 3 layers of tape but kept standard loft and lie as I'm average height of 5'9

That was a 'free' fitting and a bit rushed imo. Going to go and pay a proper shaft fitter soon for a driver

My buddy is well over 6 foot but he has REALLY long arms so is fine with standard length clubs.

You also have to take into account that, say, "standard" lie, varies between all club manufacturers. I have 2* flat lie in my Titleist AP2's but that would be standard in Mizuno (as far as I can recall).

So by the looks of the feedback so far, if your 6ft + and dont have arms like a baboon and hopefully dont have a face like one, then if fitted correctly, there should be some alterations to the standard lenght and lie of your clubs

My Titleist AP2'S are 2* flat - but that is the same as 0* in a Mizuno (as far as I can recall)

I'm the other way 5'7'' on a hot day, possibly less if I shrink in the cold or rain. Had a fitting for irons and needed a change in loft and lie but don't recall the figures. Also recommended flex shafts as being of more advanced (NOT mature) years it was thought I needed all the help I could get.

Not sure if that helps but I know the fitted R11 irons work really well - when the numpty holding them does his bit right:whistle:

I'm 6'4 and got fitted just over a Year ago.

Can't remember all the tinkering, but all I do know is that everything changed from standard and I have dropped 2 shots off my handicap since and now hit the ball 1 club further than I did beforehand, so would recomend it to anyone.

Apart from the money factor of getting new clubs (which is pretty minor when you spread the costs over years with clubs vs. number of rounds) don't understand why you would not get it done.

If anything, it gives me peace of mind that when I hit a duff, over club, a Sherman or whatever, it is well and truly me and not the weapons fault!

In golf, there are no standards to define standard and you can't go on height alone. The length of your arms and your swing will affect the length and lie. I'm 6'1" and was using 1/4" longer 3' upright in my pings. Now have 1/2" longer standard lie in my AP2s
