After range_balls post on who you would you play with if you had one chance, who is your golfing hero and why?

Mine is Sergio because of the shot from behind the tree he hit at Medinah in 1999 when I was just getting interested in golf properly. Since then i've followed him every week he plays and really hope this year he finally gets a major he deserves!

Anyway be intersting to hear everyone elses!

I'm a big monty fan too - not so much for the tantrums although I like the way thats such a part of his character, but because he was so sucessful from not having great natural gifts. He's not long, no magician around the green etc, but the epitome of what hard work can achieve.

My hero would be Seve - never knowing whether he was out of a hole, a match or a tournament. A wild drive was merely an excuse for him to try (usually successfully!) something a bit different. His obvious love for the game and inability to understand the concept of defeat really made him a bit different for me. Just hope he'll be as successful in his medical tribulations over the coming months and years.

SEVE he was the master .... i think he played golf on the edge and was one of the few who turned golf into what it is today. What could't he do with a golf ball he was a complete one off, very talented few come close.

Faldo for me.

Don't know why particularly but whenever I'm standing over a difficult shot I imagine Faldo playing the shot and then it seems easier. He was always the one I followed around tournaments in the early 90's when I started.

Seve for everything he brought to the game and the way nothing was impossible. After meeting him and watching him "inside the rope" (actually standing next to his caddy) Faldo rates up there.

For being a decent all round fellow who has supported several charity events with signed shirts and because he is my favourite of the current crop step forward Mr Westwood.

My more serious option is Bobby Jones.

The grand slam of US open and amateur, British open and amateur, no one else has done it, or will ever do it.

Sandy Lyle, during his heyday in the 1980s he was the best ball striker in the game!

Also, for those who questioned his commitment, regarding his walk off at last years Open, he was the player who turned down a chance to play in the Ryder Cup because he knew his game was failing. If that's not commitment to the European cause then I don't know what is.

Strangly enough my two heros are both Yanks.

Firstly there is Mr Watson, winner of five Claret Jugs, two Masters and a US Open at a time where the competition was so stiff. A gentleman and I mostly admire how he has always battled through "dodgy putting" yet won so much. His enthusiasm and respect even today makes a mockery of so many jumped up professionals who spit the dummy at the slightest thing.

Secondly there is the late Payne Stewart, graceful swing and ball striker as well as a great putter.

DCB>>agreed,Sandy Lyle was the imperious ball striker!
Almost reduced Craig Stadler to tears by cruising a 1 iron 30 yards past Stadlers best drive!
Great temprament, swing and attitude....only sorry he didn't achieve so much more(plus seems a nice guy!!)

It would have to be big Jack for me, I saw him as a boy, followed him and was inspired by him to take up the game, though Seve and the Shark were golfing heros to me too, its hard to choose but I think jack pips it.

Gary Player and Lee Trevino

I think Player was one of the first golfers I saw on TV, somehow always saw him as the underdog.
Trevino for his irreverence.

oh, and my mate for getting me started.

Mine could well be jiminez, he is the pro who my swing is most alike, I think! Plus he makes smoking stogies look good, I want to look as cool as him when I light a stogie next time I play poker or bring in the new year!

Growing up in Ireland the golfing hero of the country was "himself" or Christy O'Connor Snr.

As a teenager in the 70's seeing a young Greg Norman at the Irish Open was a thrill--the man could launch the ball hit and far.

How its Harrington--have to admire a man who has made teh most fo his talents--hes not the most talented player but hes works damm hard at improving.
