I think Harrington would definitely be in my top 10. Trouble is when you go back even as far as the 80's there are so many you think I liked him etc. Try picking a top 10 all timelist and then re-read it tomorrow. I bet at least one will change

Tom Watson for me, too. True gentleman..and one of the few who ever gave Jack a run for his money. Still love his swing...and his attitude.

As a boy it was probably Seve with Big Sandy a close second. Aa I got older and learned more about the history of the game, I now have a great respect for some of the guys that I never got to see, most notably Hogan and the legendary Bobby Jones.

Seve by a country mile, he saved the Ryder cup, he is by my accounts the best ever European golfer to have played and his imagination still has be in shock.

Tiger Woods! I love watching this fella play the game its bloody brilliant! I'm not a believer in cheering for the underdog, if you want to win then try harder and no one try's harder than this guy!

Having just read the whole thread I was shocked to have not seen Tiger Woods get a mention so well done Pinseeker. He would have to be in anyones top 10 list of golfing heros surely?
As for my hero I really am not sure having only been into golf at all for the last 2 years and think picking a 'hero' would be impossible. However the player I would most like to be and most respect would have to be Padraig Harrington, he has it all the game on the course and mannerisms that command respect off of it- to me he is THE model pro.

What, you mean the guy who spits and curses his way around the course in between club throwing sessions.
Oh, I forgot about the rules incidents..the "loose impediment" that took 12 guys to move and the clubhouse roof incident where the 5 minute deadline for finding your ball expanded to 20 minutes. Just like Jack, Tom or Arnie, eh? It would make them blush.

I Think I've got to Name Greg Norman & Seve as golfing hero's. They've been hero's & inspiration from when it mattered.
More recent inspiration & Hero's I've got to look to the likes of Darren Clarke, Jiminez, Monty, Lee Westward & Thomas Bjorn. As they were the players that finally got me playing.
If we were to look to the golfer who stood out from an earliest age might be perhaps for me at least Jack Nicklaus for one. Though to be honest he does little for me these days, even though what he achieved has little to compare his achievements.
But of course I can't say Jack Nicklaus as, to be a hero, he must continue to stick out as being worthy in my eyes as, just that.... Worthy.
So I come back to the likes of Norman & Seve, asfor me they are magicians of the golf course. With almost a slight of hand, an instinctive quality & strength of character to throw the rule book out of the window & just play golf & play it their way.

Pinseeker may not have worded his reply in the best possible way John, or then again maybe he was being a tad cheeky, however I find Tiger to be one of the most humble players in todays game, I genuinely believe that he conducts himself in an impecable manner while under such media scrutiny. Yes he may have the occasional spit however he is no worse than Sergio in this department in fact I would say even less so. I agree two wrongs dont make a right yet after Sergio has had so many votes people dont pick up on his spitting habit.
Again in my opinion Tiger is no worse temperamant wise than Sergio, Poulter, Sabatini, Monty, etc etc. All these players have "slammed" clubs and had the odd spit of the dummy. Its easier though to knock the guy at the top.
What has sportsmanship got to do with it, if your refering to the incidents quoted then sorry I am going to have to disagree with you. The rules are wrong here and he used them to his advantage, the referees allowed it and quite frankly is it any worse than Phil getting a free lift out of the trees at Augusta due to "line of sight" with a TV tower.
Players like Tiger box clever and use rules to their advantage, the fact that they can do so is what has to be questioned, not the actions themselves.

Ok Craw. I respect your opinion. Tiger's manners probably aren't any worse than many others. I just couldn't regard him as a hero along the lines of many of the old school players who just don't find themselves open to such criticism. They tended to know the right path.
A couple of his decisions , the one's cited, have been borderine at least. He chose to invoke those rules when he could have garnered greater respect by simply playing on without bending the rules to within an inch of their lives. I just don't think they were in the spirit of the game. In my opinion a player of greater character would have done otherwise. Yes, the rules allowed what he did but ultimately his actions were his own decision. If I had been his caddy I'd be saying "Hang on Boss, are you sure you want to play the game like this?"
Remember Darren Clark's shot of the year at the Irish Open when play was delayed and he just hacked it up the fairway with a wedge from a newly acquired perfect lie. He lost the tournament by one shot but gained my ultimate respect for that, even though I can't bring myself to actually like the man. But at least the decision was one I would expect a hero to make.

This game we serve is bigger than all of us and when we are all buried or frozen in Cryogenics, Golf will still be played. I only hope that juniors are taught the spirit so that it continues.

I’m not a big Tiger fan for a few reasons, some JF pointed out. What rips my knitting is his sour face attitude at times. I just think a reality check would not go amiss now and then. Incidentally, I’m sour faced but tiger’s not been on my Glasgow paper run. I also went off him, not his fault really, because the TV people just go Tiger Tiger Tiger and I’ll bet that will happen again. At times it was as if no one else was in the tournament, and in many ways that’s how it was. However, in F1, the tour de France or Moto GP, when someone has a good lead they tend to concentrate more on the guys behind as usually that’s where the excitement is. Not so when Tiger on a roll, they never miss a shot and cut from others to see what he’s up to.
