Was having a quick nine holes yesterday, and met up on the 3rd with a chap who was a good player, off 7.

On the last hole his 2nd shot landed in some trees to the right of the green, no way he could play the ball so he took a drop out.

Now he said he could drop back as far as he wanted as long as he kept a straight line from the ball to the last place he hit it from, so he went back 15(ish) yrds back onto the fairway with a clean line to the pin and played it from there.

Is this right, as I was always told you could go back to where you took your last shot, or drop back as far as you want out in a straight line no nearer the pin.

Cheers

I know I should be up to date on the rules but trying to remember them all is just to much for my little old brain.

No that is so wrong, the option he tried to take he should have gone back as fr as he wants keeping the spot the ball finished between him and the flag.

He should play off less han 7 if he makes up his own rules

got ya, so its either drop with penaulty within 2 clubs length, as far back in line with the hole or a panaulty back to where it was originally played and replay the shot.

so so so many different rules to this game its scary, and more importantly everyone has their own version of each rule. I think alot of games could quite easily be doubled in length if most rules were questioned.

Yes thats all you have

Do you have the numbers for this one. I could trawl through and try and work it out but I'd be dribbling by the end of the first sentence and comatose by the end of the first paragraph..

Again a low h/c golfer who doesnt know a most basic and often used rule. I can understand someone whos just started the game and hasnt the knowledge or experience getting it wrong.

I played a m/w comp yesterday afternoon and one of the fellas was a 10 and going by his big mouth feels that he should be considerably lower. Even stating that he could easily beat me in the club champs this year if he brought his A game  err ok then fancy a £50 bet ?
The point is he landed on a flattened mole hill and asked for relief , no probs says I and stood watching as he just picked up his ball and dropped it where he thought he'd get a nice lie. WTF. Hang on mate you cant just do that and proceeded to explain the rule to him. Eventually he drops correctly and then proceeds to tug at a stone under his ball and rolls his ball about an inch away. WTF. 'You cant move your ball mate' says I. 'Give it a rest and pish off' says he. So I signed the 3rd fellas card and left them to it (13th hole). Had a good card going too , but its a point of principle to me that I wont/dont play with cheats.
How many rounds has this bloke played by just making things up ?

That's the big issue IMO. How many people have also seen him doing stuff and just couldn't be arsed to say anything or thought something like "he's on his way to a 90 anyway so he won't trouble the prizes"
