Where to drop

So I signed the 3rd fellas card and left them to it (13th hole). Had a good card going too , but its a point of principle to me that I wont/dont play with cheats.
How many rounds has this bloke played by just making things up ?

Good for you, the problem being that the next competition this guy plays with people, who, either dont know the rules or choose to ignore his cheating, and then he puts in a winning card!!

But at least you did what you should have.

got ya, so its either drop with penaulty within 2 clubs length, as far back in line with the hole or a panaulty back to where it was originally played and replay the shot.

just to clarify this point as I think the above is a bit misleading.
Rule 28 c "Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole."

Look up rule 28 if you want to know all of the options after you declare a ball unplayable. Personnally if I hit a ball in the jungle during a comp I always hit a provisional as this covers the eventuality of having to replay the shot from it's original position or if you can't find it.
Nothing more annoying seeing a player running towards you with club in hand to replay his shot.

Wow thanks for all the input chaps.

As he was a better player than myself I didn't say anything, plus it was only a knock about, but I was sure what he did was wrong.

I must say he was a very good player, only played a few holes with him but he got 3 pars and a birdie.

I did say we would get another game together next week, (have 3 days off) so will keep a eye out this time and might even have a chat about the rule on the way round.

Cheers

I've probably misunderstood what you mean here... If you find that original you have to proceed with it, even if it does mean trotting back to where you last played.

Apologies if that's what you meant :o

No it doesn't. If you find the original, it is in play, and you must proceed with one of the 3 options. Playing the provisional isn't one of them.

It doesnt necessarily cover both of those situations. If you find your ball(in play) your provisional ball can't be played at all.

If after finding your original ball you then choose the option to go back to the place where you played the previous shot, then the provisional cant be used and you would still need to go back and hit again.I guess that this is to stop you choosing the "best ball" and the danger is, of course, that you could repeat the same senario!

Aint the rules of golf, great fun!

sorry, it was the lost ball option I meant I was covering.

although some may argue that if your ball is unplayable and the only option is to go back and replay you have already done it with the sample penalty but saved time.

( That should stir it up a bit)

Agree it would save time, but it's not the same because you hit your provisional immediately after your 'unplayable', I guess it's like having a practice shot first? How many times does the provisional fly straight and true compared to the original? ;)
