This might not be the best time of the day for a post but here goes. And i apologise in advance for the length but i hope some may have the time to read and reply to it.
I would really be interested in the opinions and views of the educated and those who may have had similar troubles..
I also relate to Homer's post yesterday about the direction that his game is going.
For the past 3 to 4 months or so (Im not really including the winter months in this) my game is steadily going to crap for different reasons but mainly from distructive tee shots and poor ball striking in general.

Iv got 0.1 back for the past 6 comps and have gone back to 17 after yesterday's shinannigens .

My short game is pretty decent with my wedge play and putting and scrambling around the greens getting me points that i dont deserve from the drival that im knocking off the tee.

I play a left to right ball flight which for the most part i can control but couple that with knocking down tee shots hitting really fat shots with my irons(im talking divots that i could easily turf a new lawn with) and hitting every conceivable shape of shot under the sky with an out to in swing and you can pretty much draw your own conclusions as to where this is going.

I guess the answer im searching for is what do i do.
I played today for 9 holes with my i10's and the back 9 with my brothers G15's.
Now before anyone decides this isnt a plea to ask for opinions on clubs.
As i said swing path is out to in, steep and inconsistent at best.
But! And here is the catch. The G15 took shallower divots and pretty much straightened out my ball flight considerably I hit some of the straightest irons iv hit since i took up the game 2 years ago too whereas i dig with the i10's ...
Iv no problem getting the i10's airborne and distance isnt an issue but i have as much direction now with them as Bambi on ice.

Now you can argue that its a swing issue that i have and ill be the first to agree with you but what do i do.
Forget about the handicap and work on doing something with the swing for the summer.
Practice time would be very limited as i have an 8 yr old and a 3 yr old and i work 9-6 mon-fri.
My short game i work on at home on the carpet and chipping out the back yard.
Or do i go with the wide soles and play the swing i have and just TRY to muster up something with the ability that i already have.
Is it really worth the effort chasing that single figure handicap something i would love or should i just bite the bullet and get equipment that would help me enjoy the game more.
I know that there is a decent player in me but at the moment there is so much frustration in my game i cant figure out what to do. But i WONT give up.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mike. :D

A guess, and this is only from what I've read - not from personal experience.

I think too deep divots might well be from an upright swing that is too upright, so the angle of attack on the downswing is too steep.

Whether the solution is a slightly flatter backswing, or a different ball position, I don't know.

The other potential problem is maybe that you are swaying off the ball on the backswing.

Question. Is the lie of the G15s slightly flatter than your clubs? It's possible that if they set up flatter, they might be leading you into a flatter swing.

I'm not saying this is the answer, but chucking a couple of ideas out there to start a brainstorming session.

Would you pay £20 for a driver that hit the ball straight?

Bob i would give anything to be able to stand over a ball and have a fair idea of the direction and the shape that i was going to travel.
Today i hit hooks, pulls, pushes, slices ,tops , thins....You name it and i managed to pull it off at some stage today.
Regardless of what club was in my hands.
Maybe a new pair of arms and hands wouldn't go amiss.
So i suppose Yes would be my answer.

I dont think so mate.
Both the G15's and the i10's are black dot..
Only difference is the shafts in my i10's are stiff and the G15's are Reg.

As regards the swaying.Iv no idea..
I may have felt it this morning with my woods alright because i topped 5 tee shots with my 3 wood... Knocked it 50 yards down in front of me. And it felt weird to me....

Well, spend it on a lesson and you'll learn how to hit all your clubs straight

There is a Pro over here that i was put in contact with and i have spoke to him a few weeks ago...He said that he'd be happy to have me but one thing he said kinda of stuck in my mind and im not sure how to take it...
He told me that if anyone goes for a lesson they should see an improvement straight away on there game if they implement what there being thought. Any instructor that says your game will get worse for a few months in his view is wrong..

He says that a change should see an improvement in the flawed area straight away.
Im not sure!

I have seen an improvement every lesson!!!

depends how much they have to change, I have had no stance changes only slight tweaks of swing plane, grip I think I have altered myself as used to use 10 finger (baseball) grip but moved to interlock about a month ago.

So the answer is yes you can see changes straightaway if what is changed is a complte swing, grip, stance change, even then for some it may show an immediate improvement imho

Kid go for a lesson but you need to go with the mind set of change. Go back to basics and try to forget about what irons you're hitting etc and just hit the ball straight.

Good luck mate.

Im not in disagreement gents...
And feel free to have a go as a lesson is something iv never had but in getting lessons is there any point in getting them if i cant practice them a few times a week at a range...

Im only thinking from my football days where training twice and three times a week is a necessity to maintain sharpness and fitness.

As i said in my post i have a young family so practice is limited as there's a 35 minute drive to my course and the same to the nearest driving range with not so good facilities its tough to get the time.

depends on the individual, I try and goto the range twice a week but tbh I havent always been for a week or 2 after a lesson due to work/kids. It really depends how much needs changing and how soon you want to ingrain it

Keep at it :)

Find a start point with your swing and focus on the basics of getting that swing path changed (lesson or range). One thing at a time, dont run before you can walk. You want to straighten out your ball flight, not hit booming right to left draws.

One foot in front of the other and you will get there :)

One advantage of having occasional lessons is that your pro will know not to put too much on you at a go.

Another is that you'll develop a good long term relationship with him, and he'll gladly give you the odd tip in between lessons if you are getting suicidal about your game.

Kid2.......

I have now had 2 lessons and believe me the first one altered my stance and hip movement and I have never had a to much of a problem with it since easy for me to implement and maintain....

My second has put my game in the [****].... totally different swing plane now I cant hit it.....My game was bound to go backwards because I need to become used to the change. I used to coach cricket and there was nothing better than changing something in someones action and then seeing them screw up .....insisting they stick with it and then watching the smile on their face when it "clicks".....

after a lesson i feel you need to wait for the "click" and the light bulb to turn on some times ...just my thoughts

Mike. You are on a bit of a "Melman" aren't you.

We've all been there. I always go for a lesson when things are messed up - it gives me something to concentrate on, a reason to practise and hope for the next game.

I've had lessons from a couple of Pros over the last few years, and not one of them has had any lasting effect. They were trying to get me to have the perfect swing, rather than working with what I had. So much so that the last video lesson I had I posted on here. Strangely enough a fellow forummer noticed important things that the pro missed. Things that were quite important.

After the now infamous lesson and subsequent problems being locked in, I'm playing better.

I'm not saying, don't get a lesson or two. But just be aware that you get what you want from the lesson, and not the other way round.

There are some damn fine pro's out there that are good teachers, and some that aren't. It might be an expensive route to take, if you find one that isn't.

Conversely. There are some good players out there that might be able to help you more.
