Okay, as winter has finally caught up with me over here in the Netherlands - mud mud mud! - I am at the range. Really enjoying the games that the toptracers afford us. Capture the flag, or target golf with the mates. It's great. Playing with a friend I realised that I have a favorite shot type. I was wondering if you all have a favorite shot. For me it's crafting shots under 100 yards to a specific target - preferably a flag (pin). Figuring out how to finesse 80 yards, 65 yards, 95 yards, and even down to 35 yards. It's just so much fun to me. Much more fun that hitting driver. I guess I enjoy the creativity of it. Focussing on hitting line and length also eliminates all kinds of random intrusive thoughts I guess.

So, my question to you all is: what's your favorite shot, the shot that makes you tick golf wise, and why?

Similar to you I think. I can hit my 50° around 110 yards full pelt, but if I’ve got a 50-90 yard shot into a bit of breeze or up hill, I do enjoy putting the ball in the back of my stance and knocking the flight down, like you say, being a bit creative.

If I’m driving well I also like getting on a tee box and seeing a nice left to right dog leg with something clear to aim at and fade off.

In my best years I had an Ossie Maxfli blade 2 iron and a Hogan 4 wood
I loved both of those clubs from around the 200/ 230 yard mark.
Two totally different types of shots, one seldom got higher them a double decker bus.

In those days any wood over a 4 wood were for use by pussy cats only.

Exactly the same as OP, I think its down to the close control you have over the ball and the margin of error is much smaller than smashing a driver, I am mainly on a practice ground and another benefit is you don't have as far to walk to collect the balls back.

I used to love hitting driver but nowadays it fills me with fear. Right now I guess my favourite feeling from a shot is flushing my 3 wood off the deck. Haven't had a 3 wood for years until I got one this year, but the G425 makes a really satisfying crack when you hit one out of the middle. Not that I hit it out the middle every time of course.

Can't really say I enjoy the inside 100 yard shots at this time of year as there's about 50% chance I fat it in the mud.

Scratch all that actually - my favourite shot is the 6 inch putt. I feel like I'm pretty deadly from that range.

My favourite shot after I have played is any shot that comes out of the sweet spot..
A really good strike never fails to give enjoyment.
I am not really sure what my favourite shot is in anticipation of the shot, when I'm playing well I enjoy hitting driver, there is something a bit visceral about a full swing even though I'm a short hitter.
But interesting pitches, flop shots or even putts can pique my interest if I feel I have it in me.

For me it's the shank.

Partly down to the uncertainty over when it's going to happen and partly the random flight of the ball, not too far off line but very low for a centred hostel strike, or flying way right for one right out of the "shank sweet spot".

On my day I can shank with the best of them, but then I'll lose my touch for weeks on end and be completely unable to hit one.

There's no better feeling than a well executed shank, especially one surprising your PPs who might have wondered a little too far ahead down the right side.

90-110yds into a green. Swing smoothly, chuck it up high, land soft.

The above is the theory and when done correctly looks and feels wonderful. Of course, it doesn't always happen that way but it is probably my most consistent shot. Certainly the most satisfying.

My favourite shot is the one that goes in the hole.
All the other shots are mere preliminaries.

Getting the ball in the hole was the first thing I learnt to do. I built my whole golf game from there.

Love the 80-100yd wedge, links turf, back of stance and control the flight in. Couple hops and stop dead.
Rarely all plays out like that mind you.

I have a new hybrid/rescue long iron type thing in the bag these days, 21degree, and really quite like it, love the sort of, low controlled tee shot off a par 4 playing for position. Again, can picture it in my head more than the reality.

Fav shot is approach shot with a 7-9 iron, into a one-club wind. On links turf
Oof, yes. Reminds me of the short-cut, firm, slightly sandy soil turf I had recently in Cyprus. First time I've felt like I'm really properly taking a divot, would often feel like I'd hit it fat and then I'd look up and see this lovely solid ball flight.

Same as others - any shot between 10 and 100 yards with a 52° wedge. Probably the only strong part of my game.

So, my question to you all is: what's your favorite shot, the shot that makes you tick golf wise, and why?

1. A 350 yard drive
2. When I fire an iron into the green and deliberately pitch it past the flag and it spins back to the hole.
3. A 200 yard fairway bunker shot over water to the green.

I'm very interested in number 3.
How many times have you done it?
I've never done it.
I've done the 200+ yards from sand obviously, but not over water.

We have all done number 1, haven't we?
No big deal there.
;)

A perfectly struck iron shot that has a real thud sound, arrow straight and you just know it’s going to be a tap in as soon as it leaves the club.
