Ive been wanting to post this for a while but wasn't sure how to word it , Im probably still unsure,

With work and family commitments I get to play on average 1 round of golf a week and pay for the privelage , ,I don't get to practice either range or playing 6/7 hole on an evening
Im turning 50 in 2019 , overweight but in general in good health so when I go out for my round of golf I want to relax and enjoy my round not running around the course because every1 wants to be in in 3 hours ..

Im getting tired of this need for fast golf, quick golf etc now dont get me wrong there is nothing I hate more than being held up by people who have lost a Cpl of holes as I would always call people through if we drop behind for more than one hole
I hear everyone complaining about slow play but yet to meet anyone who is a slow player ,

My Questions ..
Are we setting out with the wrong attitude ? should we be going out for a round if we have only 4 spare hours? if your playing under time pressure can you enjoy a game of golf even on an empty course ?

For many if not all on here golf is a pastime ,say it again to yourself .. a pastime ..!! a way to switch off from stresses of work and possibly family to clear your head , to stop on the journey in life and smell the roses , to appreciate the roses , to appreciate the beauty of the golf course the beauty of a good shot , the frustration of the bad round with the "I cant wait to get out again to put that round behind me"

Does anyone else get what im saying ? does anyone agree ? or am I mad ? possibly all 3 maybe

Interested in your replys and if the replys vary with the age …

As a side note I follow Mike H and Jezz E on Twitter and love their exploits around the globe, now I appreciate this is their work but I love their love of everything golf, isn't it time, well for us older chaps to see, appreciate and enjoy our pastime and see and appreciate the positives in our out in the open air, personal challenge with the course , our game and the elements ?

over to you ...

I'm surprised at your age you've still got family commitments.

Me, it takes how long it takes, 5 hours and I have an issue with It, other than getting held up on every shot then I'm cool.

I think to answer your 1st question, you don't have to rush to get round in 4hrs. Doing the right things will achieve that quite easily. My issue is when it becomes stop/start, that's when I lose my concentration. I've played rounds longer than 4hrs that have flowed smoothly, not an issue at all. What really frustrates people is the lack of thought and consideration shown by some.

Just remember because of family or work commitments somebody else may only have 3 hours in which to fit a round of golf.

If you want to take it easy just remember to call others through because the people behind you may not have enough time for a 4 hour round.

Golf probably takes less than 30 minutes. The rest of it is hanging about, waiting. More time on the golf course equates to more hanging about, not more golf. I could just go for a walk, and if I did, I would not take over 4 hours to cover about 5 miles.

Understand where you're coming from. Last Friday played Leamington as a 4 ball on an empty course with none of us having played there before and wandered round in 4 hours , most enjoyable . Stopping for chats and appreciating the day .
Then on Monday on my home course a County game against the under 14's and felt rushed as first group out and aware of 6 games behind us and then the regular Monday roll up. Youngsters were a tad slow and we had to usher them on on a couple of occasions but were still around in 4 hrs 10 .

So just 10 mins difference in time between the two rounds but Friday's far more enjoyable .

Slow play doesn’t really bother me it is what it is, I’ve seen a few get upset at slow play and I just tend to think why.

If we are lucky enough to play what’s the point in stressing yourself, many worse places to be than a golf course.

We had our last medal last Saturday. The first 4 out took 4.45. That meant everyone took 4.45. 4.45 in those conditions was brutal. Way too long.

No I'm completely with you. I've got a busy life and don't have all day for golf, and quite frankly even if I had time I wouldn't play all day, I have other things I'd like to be doing as well.

I'm a really fast player. If I'm on my own without anyone in front I can play 18 in 2h for me that won't be rushing, I just don't faff about. But I'm OK with slower rounds. 4h for 18 if I'm playing with others is fine by me. It's when it starts getting near over 4:30 hours I start to get frustrated. I just don't like waiting 5-10 mins between shots.

I don't want to rush other people but there has to be reasonable balance in pace of play to suit all.

One of the interesting things on Intelligent Golf is that in medals we have been able to pin point which groups are causing the hold ups (roughly) from time of start to time of entering their cards on the computer compared to the players around them.

One of my problems with slow play is that I have played the game long enough to remember when a 2 ball took about 2 to 2.5 hours and a 3 ball 3-3.5 playing in medals those that actually took 3.5 hours had a word said to them from the secretary the expectation was 3 hours 20 minutes. Everybody had to put the their start and finish times on the card.

Out in the last group of today's comp (3 ball stableford) we were followed by 3 competent 2 balls...
Don't remember looking for a ball more than once, and we could easily have got round 40 mins quicker; but felt between a rock (couldn't go forwards faster) and the obvious angst of those behind.
As I'm rather sensitive about such things I felt constantly rushed yet couldnt go anywhere!

Don't ask the score!

You can't focus on times, different courses (and even different tees) will have a huge difference....but, as has already been posted, you know when the games flowing - and you know when someone's ahead with the brakes on!

Slow play is less annoying than lack of consideration for others. In general you can take as long as you like as long as you are aware I don't have 5 hours and when I approach you you let me through. Sadly this happens less and less. I am sick to the teeth waiting and eventually (sometimes after 5/6 holes) being let through after waiting for 5 minutes to play every shot.

Before anyone says something - I don't expect to play through a course that is busy every hole. I am talking entirely about groups that have space in front of them.

I used to play regularly with a friend when i lived near to him and i knew before we started the game would be 1/2 to an hour longer than with most ofter people, everyone knew he was slow but nothing you could say or do to him would hurry him up and he was a good friend so didnt want to not play with him. His answer would be something along the lines of “whats wrong, dont you like being out hear in this beautiful weather”. Trouble was i used to think what am i doing for this extra hour and the only answer is watching him do whatever, wandering round the green, checking the distance, eating his sandwitch etc etc.
As mentioed above the golf part doesnt take long at all, its the waiting for everyone to play their golf that takes the time.
As a side note does anybody play proper ready golf? Ive played with people that will play it sometimes when it suits them but not for a whole game and ive had others who flatly refuse to use it saying we have to know what order we are going in.

Too many people start a round with a finish time in their head, round then becomes a race against the clock.
There’s a thread in the “Ask the Experts” area were someone is asking how long a round should take.
England Golf have done a lot of research in to this and have found the most time is spent/lost around the green and people faffing about.
Our weekend comps normally take 3:15-3:45 depending on format etc, personally I always allow 4hrs minimum and that way never get bothered with odd hold ups on odd holes.
One other point England Golf have found, 8 minute tee offs cause problems, they suggested 10 minute gaps at a minimum.

For me pace of play is that age old debate of it's always somebody else's fault never our own.

Am I a slow player of course I'm not, but that's my opinion of myself others may say otherwise.

Personally I don't mind if a round takes 3hrs or 4hrs etc as long as the game is flowing and I'm not standing around waiting on every shot. Taking your time over a shot, putt or finding a ball again no issue, but ensure that time isn't excessive or for the sake of it and keep a decent walking pace between shots then everything should flow nicely

End of the day there is no perfect amount of time for a round because everyone has a different opinion. For me a ball about 4hrs is pretty decent others say less or more.

Just keep up with the pace of play and if you need to look for a ball or lose touch with those in front be courteous and call those behind through.

Our club adopted READY GOLF at the start of the season, notices were posted on line and on the boards. But sadly some still play the old way in competitions.
