What would Rory shoot round your course?

Yes thousands and thousands of rounds a year by the very best on courses which can at times play very very easy. But they are not shooting in the 50s week in week out are they.

That comment probably says more about your lack of knowledge of just how hard these courses are set up than anything else. They sometimes play less hard, but play easy; really?

If Rory was to rock up on a nice sunny day, with his game in good shape, what do you think he'd shoot round your course?

Ours is only 6000 yards Par 70, with some of the holes definitely driveable for him and all par 5s easily reachable I reckon he'd shoot maybe 56.

Whats the SSS of your course?

Given that he grew up playing there and is still 'part' of the club, I'll have to find out what Dave Horsey has shot round Styal. It's only a par 69 to start with so I'd assume 60 at worst.

Barry Lane shot 66 (-4) on opening the course. The course and the greens have improved but I would have thought low 60's would be the least McIlroy would shoot. I can't think of any hole that would pose a threat to him and it would be about making the putts

I've seen a 66 off our,7000 yd, blue tournament tees by a +3 capper
And a 65 off our white medal tees by a scratch player.
So I imagine Rory would beat those, 62 maybe.

No one will convince me that given a few rounds Rory is not going to score in the 50s on most bog standard golf courses, not 7000 yarders, the normal 5800 to 6200 that many play.

Not to bat on about Tiger but his 57 yes was at his home course, it plays over 7500 yards and has an SS of 77 off those tees, hopefully that will put it in perspective just a tad.. Scratch golf for tour pros is **** golf and if a **** golfer can score 65 you can be sure Rory could take 3 shots either side out of him

It all boils down to how hot Rory and his putter were on the day, the actual tee to green stuff is laughable in terms of challenge on these courses


Mortonhall Edinburgh

1st Hole, a driver leaves an easy pitch from inside 50 yards
2nd. Wedge second to a flat green
3rd. 8 or 9 iron
4th, reachable par 5, tough green to hit in two
5th, dogleg par 4, loads of room if you cut the corner, easy to leave a pitch inside of 30 yards
6th. sub 300 yard par 4, very hard to hold the green in one, due to big slope
7th, 6 or 7 iron into bowl green par 3 (This is the most challenging shot of the round!)
8th drive and mid to short iron par 5
9th, 3 wood pitch par 4
10th sand wedge par 3
11th drive wedge or 9 iron par 4
12, easy to reach par 5 maybe a 6 iron into a huge green
13. drive and 8 iron, slightly elevated green long hole for most but this the toughest par 4 on the course, he would be hitting an 8 iron in.
14 driveable par 4
15 par 5, good drive would leave a hybrid approach
16, driveable par 4, you can also hit 7 iron lobber at it
17 wedge par 3
18 3 wood lob par 4

That is my estimate on how he would play a course i am familiar with, not many challenging shots in there.. course is 6550 ish


Thing is the average golfer is so far detached from the PGA standard its tough to imagine, the 13th hole, most golfers hit 2 woods at this and come up short for example.

I can club him pretty accurately based off my own positioning and cannot think of a single hole that presents any challenge at all, as i see it he has 18 realistic birdie holes and several where eagle is certainly a possibility, of course he is not making them all but not one hole would par be a good score.

yes you'd think on a short par 68 , he'd probably shoot some rounds in the 50s.
The OP was if he rocked up to your course , what would he shoot?
Off the back ours is 6900, par 72 SSS 73. I dont think he'd shoot in the 50s.

6900 yards, agree he would not march round sub 60 on a casual visit, if he joined the club and played often i would expect it, i refer ye back to Tiger scoring 57 on his home course of 7500 yards..

All i know is i would love to watch him play courses I know well and at Mortonhall, give him 10 rounds i would hope he might score 59.. having broken it down to his game it seems like one day he will simply make the putts and kick off with 6 birdies without hitting any sort of great shot.. just playing his usual game.

I'll share a story Padraig Harrington told Murph, Rickg (god rest his soul) and I when talking about playing against his brother who was off 10. It went something like this...(I'm paraphrasing)

"If we play our home course under normal conditions and I play off the back tees and he plays off the yellows, I'll give him 10 shots and he'll win half the time, If we both play off the back tees I'll give him 16 shots and it will be a good game. If he lets me set the course up to Pro tournament conditions, he can have as many shots as he wants, he won't win."

My best is an 81 playing off tees 500 yards shorter. I dont think I could break 90 off the Open tees. I'd need 30 shots off him to even think about competing. It's amazing.

No, I tend to play more than I watch, and having played courses set up to tour standard it's not an experience I'm keen to repeat. Your average private club would be nothing like that tough, but you carry on deluding yourself, it does provide entertainment for the rest of us.:thup:

PGA Tour players are generally regarded as +8 players, so on my course par 71, pro would need 63 for level par, so 4 under (59) doesn't seem impossible.

I say he would shoot 64 or 65 , 7 or 8 under min , Our +2 golfer shoots around 2 under a lot so I say he be looking at 65 gross , I shoot low too till I get out on the course ......................EYG

Great anecdote. They are playing a different game, as all sporting professionals are.
