What one course has disappointed you?

Downfield was a big let down compared to expectations. Having just played the wonderful Old Course, Jubilee and the very nice Ladybank, our other choice of inland course on the trip was the big disappointment - can't remember too well as 13 years ago but we were all in agreement - not a bad layout and quite pretty for much of it but some awkward ohles, poor greens, surrounds, fairways and bunkers - and we were expecting a Top 100 contender!
You should have played Blairgowrie instead. That is a club I could definitely be a member of.(y)

I enjoyed RND , I can see why some don’t like it because it’s not the prettiest and it’s a bit rough and the holes around the reeds aren’t great but it also has some great holes along the wall and the finishing hole is a cracker.

The clubhouse is a bit special. Didn’t really encounter any issues with the members but can see how people could - they certainly didn’t speak highly of Saunton.

It’s definitely a marmite course but it has charm a bit like Brancaster

Blairgowrie has a membership of 1800 and have 24 greens staff, there is no money spared there. Downfield had a greenkeeper who I'm told was stealing a wage for ten years and their greens were never great in the times I played it, apparently they have a new head greenkeeper who has only 5 staff and doesn't have two pennies to rub together.

I bet you're glad you've left and gone to Loch Lomond instead (y)

The Belfry PGA for me. Probably built it up far too much in my mind before playing it.

In the event it was very ordinary - 7 years on and I can't remember any hole but the first and that's probably because it is the first. Only good thing was it was a corporate day and cost me nowt.

I’m in agreement over Hollinwell.
I’d built it up too much, as I loved Sherwood and thought I’d like Hollinwell more.
It’s still a top course, but I just didn’t warm to it like I hoped I would.

I enjoyed the belfry recently. Played it 8 yrs ago and it was meh!! Whilst the holes are the same it was in great condition this year! The 10th is a terrible hole, but 18 is great IMO & the front 9 is strong. I found the 2010 at Celtic manor a bit disappointing as 18 holes of golf, but can’t fault the complex, a weekend there is pretty good.

I really like the 10th. Even the safe play leaves a tricky second. The 18th is a real test.

Recently played the 2010 again. Didn’t enjoy it as much. Think the complex is great and 3 decent courses. But won’t be rushing back.

The 10th is a good matchplay hole, but strokeplay not so much. You can’t go there and lay up 🤣🤣🤣.16 17 & 18 are all strong holes. I’ve slagged it off before, but the fairways were like my living room carpet !!! £5.50 for a cappuccino tho 😱😱😱

I played Blairgowrie with a forummer on here, Toad, and his friend. Played it in torrential rain, but loved every minute. Superb golf course, and could not ask for better guys to play it with. Fantastic.

Does it really matter why someone(s) don’t like a course? If I had a choice of playing either of them for free, I wouldn’t waste my petrol.
I’d play Sherwood every day and twice on Sunday before subjecting myself to holinwell and ganton. Think Sherwoods back 9 is a really tough 9 holes, played it numerous times in the forester it’s beats me up most times but just love the place and think it’s a better course.

I find the other 2 just unmemorable and I’ve played each 3/4 times.

Mendie, this thread is about players getting disappointed on the reputation of a course, and not who is wrong about their opinion.

I played with Toad and his mate as well. A very generous host, although they did beat us on the last. ;) Love to go back and play the course again.

^^ I always fancied ganton tho. What didn’t you rate about it? Might save me the drive

I would never advise you or anyone else not to go therod, unless it’s a real dog of a track like Cleveland is. It’s horses for courses, I really like the Oxfordshire but that’s taken stick on here, it’s what you like and is probably a must play to tick off your list.
It might be silly, but first time I played it 20+yes ago, the starter answered a question with ‘We are Ganton’ !!!!

I’ve played it 4 times, 3 of them was practise round before Mid Amateur 36 event, and I struggle to remember the routing of the holes.

Go play it and make your own mind.
