What must change to make English football better

Playing English players in the EPL for starters.

To answer the OP.
England will always get better, the problem is the number of other nations who are improving quicker.

This means they will get better at playing but will be lower ranked.

What have England previously won when they did play English players in the Prem ?

My 8 year old grandson is going through the Scottish youth system in Ayrshire and I am mighty impressed with it.
The two coaches stay with the team from 6 years old to 16. Some commitment 10 years.
He played two seasons of 4 a side with no goalies and moves on to half pitch 7 a sides with goalies this coming season.
The boys are developing fast and the parents are just great. No pitch side yelling and arguments.

Yes my nephew just came back from a tournament where there were no winners or losers and they all got a medal.

Still nowhere near enough coaches

Going to take about 10-15 years for it to filter through
.

Does that not contradict your earlier post!

From what I see of the youth set up through mates with young lads, they play on smaller pitches with smaller nets, look to play the right way, and no-one wins a league etc till over a certain age!

England won and got to semi finals of major tournaments when we had a lot more of our top flight clubs full of English players!

The selfish top 6 and the aspirations of every club owner to get and stay in the greed league will never let the English talent develop!

And the top English club fans want the same thing!

The greed league will ruin international football!

School teams and young team coaches did not what anyone who might put their foot on the ball.

they want the biggest, strongest types to stop people in defence and pacey players up front. ball retention is the last thing on their minds.

winning is the most important thing. not playing a nice brand of football. keeping shape and keeping a good back line is the things drilled into youngsters.

boot the ball ......... OUTTTTT !!!

under 12's playing in full size pitches and full size nets is silly. hit the ball high and the keeper cant get it. comedy football.

when you have the countries best players who are not comfortable in possession of the ball and unable to kick with their "other foot", you know you are in trouble.

The 2007 article sums it up better but I can't find it online, but the basic gist is that as long as we are preoccupied with pushing kids onto full size pitches as earlier as possible, we encourage the lumpers and discourage the skill.

It is worth remembering that prior to the EPL the English leagues were stuffed with the best players from Scotland Ireland and Wales.

I think it would be difficult to name a 'greatest' English league side that did not have it's fair share of Anglos.

Ure, Neil, Mclintock, Brady etc @Aresnal
Law, Best, Crerand etc at United
Hansen, Dalgliesh, at Liverpool etc etc

Agree with the sentiment, but everyone involved in grass roots football wants to get away from this whole thing of chucking 12 year olds onto a full size pitch. the problem is the smaller pitches just aren't available. Most if not all weekend games are played on council pitches, and they are only prepared to mark out full size pitches. Smaller goals cost money so thats a non-starter as they won't get used as much as a full size pitch which can then accommodate mens games after the kids have played. Having kids go from mini-soccer straight to full size games is mental but its all we have unless you are lucky enough to find yourself in a Preiership academy. Welcome to England:rolleyes:

Firstly get rid of Mr Hodgson.

The FA needs a major overhaul from the top and get rd of all those with their noses in the trough.

If the above doesn't happen then England will just stumble along like a drunken sailor.

Then get a manager who will use the players in their best positions(see 96 team)and if that means dropping a name then so be it.

I've read Hodgson didn't have a great choice players to choose from, so why didn't he conjure up a plan/tactic to fit the players at his disposal?

At the top level we have enough coaches and the FA would always consider hiring overseas if the need fitted. The problem is very simple. We have an effective U18 and U21 league and produce top quality players from U16 onwards and are successful on the European and World stage even against the likes of Germany, Spain and France. The issue is as soon as they get to 18 onwards the PL squeeze them out. Unless you are an absolute star in the making like Rooney, Owen or Barkley and they get given their chance most struggle in the reserves, get the odd Carling cup outing and stagnate.

The lucky ones may get loaned to a struggling PL or up and coming Championship side and will get experience but far too many are being lost in the system and wasting away. This will be the same until the number of home grown players is higher than 32% as it was last season and that clubs are made to have a minimum number of English players named in PL squads.

As it goes, I don't actually blame Hodgson. He has made changes and brought youngsters into the squad and given them their head and if he stays and we finally get managerial stability rather than yet another new face coming in, I think they will be ready for the EC's in two years with a qualifying campaign behind them. The FA though are inept through and through but its the old school tie brigade which is never going to change. You only have to look at the reaction to the Dyke report to see that it was far too radical.

The young players are there and need to come through and play in the premire league , they needs to be in place 6 man rule of players that can play for England in every team so they get the chance and not as it is not where they just get cheap european player in , how do we know if they are good enough if they dont get a chance ? as for the lack of world class players , you need a team 1st , the Greeks won the euros with a team , no stars and the Denmark did too , 1971 Arsenal team that won the double had no stars just like the Notts Forest Side that won the champions league , same again a strong team , I have watch the footie each night and these smaller teams with no stars don`t half give it a go , thats how England us to be , need to give the local lads a chance to come through , simples ..........................EYF

It is Nottingham Forest, not Notts. Notts is short for the county of Nottinghamshire, as in Notts County. And they won the European Cup, not the Champions League. And they did have stars in their side, in fact they had the 1st Million pound player when they won it the second time.

And as for restricting the number of foreign players then this is not going to happen., It is against the law and also the clubs will never voluntarily do it. Why should they, they want the best team to win the champions league. The fact they play in England is almost secondary to them, the owners want a team of the best players, they do not care a jot where they are from.

From what I see round here is all pitches are dual marked for adults and kids.... The smaller goals get wheeled out for games, then put away after.. where's the problem?

Unless you're very lucky one will be mini soccer and the other will be full size. There is no in between.

No, they mark the smaller pitch in a blue line. Looks like 3/4 size from the looks of it. Maybe a bit smaller. Not sure as I just observe as I drive past.

It all seems very organized and I am generally impressed, and just presumed all junior football was like that these days.

I thought that at one point their club badge had Notts Forest on it then Cloughie came along [and being a man of few words] dropped the Notts and club emblem now just says Forest...

That's a myth I think, the club badge was changed to its current form from something with NFFC on it before Cloughy arrived there.

If you call Forest 'Notts Forest' to any football fan in Nottinghamshire, especially Forest ones, they tend to go ballistic at you.;) And woe betide any broadcaster that makes that mistake, I think Chris Waddle still does it.

I don't think it helps the future of the England nation team when young players with a lot of potential are bought by the big clubs only to rot away on the bench.

It was said earlier about superstar wages, these are offered to the young rising English talent and most likely a sum they can't turn down, but once they make that move they have to find a space in a team full of already established stars. As a consequence they don't get the regular first team football they were getting.

A prime example was Jack Rodwell. He was a future midfield star and was lured by Man City and has hardly played in the two seasons he's been there. The same with Scott Sinclair and to an extent Jolean Lescott & Micah Richards.

Daniel Sturridge was lucky IMO to get out of Chelsea, he was never going to get a starting spot and has since blossomed since joining liverpool.
