Hi all,

I'm currently looking to join my first golf club and I'm just curious to see if there were any particular aspects of yours that helped sway your decision?

For me, the 2 closest clubs are also the most expensive and my favourite course is a municipal that doesn't have a proper membership scheme. The few with the best student offers also seem to be the least interesting courses and are also a good 30 minute drive away. I'm also finding it hard to gauge the activeness and atmosphere that each club has by just playing there and I'd ideally like to be a part of a more active club.

So, what made you decide to join your club?

For me the question was what did I want from the club, i.e. what was most important? The answer was a club where the members made me feel welcome, the course was in decent condition and the cost was not prohibitive. I'm quite lucky in that the course that best fitted the bill was also the closest - about a mile away.
If you can prioritise what is most important to you it will help in making your choice after all what suits one person may not suit another.

Its local enough, its a decent track and has excellent greens. The members are fantastic compared to my old snooty club and its got Sky TV, a pool table and its a brilliant relaxed clubhouse atmosphere.

The course decided it for me. Purpose built when we moved from the racecourse and a much better challnege. Add in better practice facilities, decent clubhouse great members and perhaps most importantly no booked tee times (except for comps) means I can go up whenever and go out for a gamel

Danny Heaton park is a great Muni. Some very tricky holes . I'm going to join Whitefield next year. Looks a great course and friendly members. Dont know what the student fee's are. But full is£750 at the mo. If you want I can give you a phone number to ring, for infomation. Think it is the club sec's mobile but not sure. Its the number the pro gave me for info. But not rang it yet. They seem to have a good youth side from what I saw when I was down there.

Where abouts in M/c are you as I dont think you are far from me. I'm Cheetham Hill?

P.S. Dont take this the wrong way. But I'm guessing from your name your jewish. Whitefield is mainly a jewish club. So plenty of tee times on a Sat. If you dont mind playing then. I'm a gentil(feeble joke) so ok for me lol.

cheap, cheap and cheap again

I was on a very tight budget for my 1st year into golf, this fitted the bill and is also a challenging but not long course so ideal for me to learn the game but still enough longer hooles to have a go at.

its 9 miles away so not too far but is as friendly as can be. Add into that only 90 members (its on an RAF base) and I can rock up when I want and be the only one on the course, if theres is someone else at the tee then they will always welcome you joining them. Comps every weekend which suits as I dont play weekdays.

could do with better practise facilities but then again I can just go on the course as practise so not a major issue

Got to say that in the current climate, cost is a huge factor. No joining fee at my place and subs are reasonable.

A number of clubs I've heard about have just gone back to waiting lists after a few years of membership shortages. Their first action? To whack up joining fees to a grand plus. Then they'll wonder why they can't attract new members again in a few years.... they never learn

Great Hadham.. currently taking half the land clearance from the Olympics site for "remodelling". Hence it's cheap at the moment. When the upheaval finishes, it should be better... I hope!

With a bigger budget, it's not where I'd play, but needs must at the moment.

For me it was word of mouth initially then went down to have a look at the place. Add in the fact that it is a links course so very rarely bad enough weather wise and the fact it is cheap.

For me it was the welcoming nature of the members, along with a tough test on the course, but mainly the membership fee. No joing fees and £400 per year for under 30's, although knowing the head pro from school helped as I got 10% off so £360 per year for a full 7 day membership.

Was the best investment I have made this year!! Have loved every minute of it.

Haha Dave, I'm not Jewish, I didn't realise my name came across as a Jewish name.

I absolutely adore Heaton Park and think it's probably one of the best courses around here but I don't think I would join as it is far too busy at weekends and there are no practice facilities. I live in Moston now (used to live near Bowker Vale metrolink station) so I was looking at Blackley,North Manchester and Brookdale, have you played many courses around here?

I'll have a look into Whitefield as it's probably only 15 minutes away from here and I've heard the pro there is top notch. If they can do a student deal under £300 it would be tempting.

Hi Danny. Have many jewish friend half of them called Danny. So just assumed with you beening north M/c too. Have played North Manchester many moons ago. Nice course but not cheap. If and when I join Whitefield(not till next year) will let you know. Then if you fancy a round it should be cheaper.

Thanks for the offer Dave, I doubt I'll be wanting to join anywhere this year anyway as there isn't much point over winter. If you fancy a round at Heaton Park anytime, let me know.

2 mins from the house.
Good Value and Decent enough course with fantastic views.
Nowhere close to the top courses in Fife but cost/distance prevent me from joining them.

Aye but with your pension in the next couple of years I'm looking forward to my monthly games at Ladybank!

Hello Danny, Whitefield is a good course, but one other thing to consider is that if you join Whitefield, you will probably be able to play all the other Jewish courses in the country. Our club (Lee park) in Liverpool is a semi-jewish course. I'm not but some of my friends are, but what does it matter anyway, I even play with Evertoniansd sometimes!!!

Other jewish courses in the region is ours, Dunham forest and moore Allerton in Leeds (27 great golf holes). There are also courses in Glasgow, Birmingham and 5 in London. So if you do travel around, you can play some great courses for free, some of the london courses are over £100, but are great. You'll be able to play all of them for free, although there are certain restrictions. Come and play Lee park, anytime if you fancy it.

I joined ours because they did the joining fee at the time over 10 years, although not required anymore, and also a good "working mans" atmosphere at our club. I hate snobbery.

BTW Played North Manchester (Middleton???) in an open this year - greens were shocking and 36 Stableford points actually won as a 4BBB. I think it was due to water problems, but they were terrible.

I'll have a look into Whitefield as it's probably only 15 minutes away from here and I've heard the pro there is top notch. If they can do a student deal under £300 it would be tempting.
