Just watching the Open coverage and one of the commentators mentioned that with the double greens it is common to see golfers playing to the wrong hole. What would be the penalty if you putt out into the wrong hole?

Nothing. The wrong hole is 'a hole made by a greenkeeper' so you get free relief.
