What is the best way to become consistent

As I try and get my handicap down, my ball striking has improved loads. But i just seem to have a shot or run of shots / holes where it all goes to pot. How does everyone feel they became more consistent??

Are you actually getting our handicap down? If so, then you are almost certainly becoming 'more consistent' in the process!

What you are experiencing (a weird shot or series of shots) happens at every level - including the top Pro ranks! For we hackers, I believe the solution is to work out how to handle this sort of event best. It may work best to analyse and adjust, or to simply ignore, depending on each player's nature and the particular glitch!

As to the best way of becoming a more consistent scorer - a rather different task/question - is short game, short game, short game! Spend 3 times as much time practicing short game as you do the long game!

There's certainly a role for lessons too!

So nothing to do with the swingpath and clubface direction then?
If you hit out the sweetspot they take care of themselves, I did explain that when you can do this you can then consider more about direction but not before. If I asked you to hit a nail into a piece of wood with a hammer you wouldn't fill your head up with how you moved your arms. However It is important to understand that the wrists should not flip at the ball though.

Had my first game today since reading all your comments.

I wanted to focus on keeping the ball in play, not compounding mistakes and thinking more about the short game shots. Also not getting upset when the ball didn't go where i planned it to go.

I think I managed to do most of these things reasonably well to day and the fact I am able to say what my gross score is, is in itself an achievement. Too many times recently I have been saying x amount of points with x number of blobs.

Shot a scratch 83 which was 12 over and 6 under my current handicap. I felt that hardly anything bothered me today and I just went and found the ball and played the next shot. i even got up and down today from a bunker and from off a couple of greens which is an improvement.
I know it is only one game but at least it gives me some encouragement.

Will re read the thread again later. Thanks

Practice, Practice and more practice! That includes on course practice!
Is the shot or run of bad holes on certain holes?? or just random??

Go out - get a scorecard - Fairways in reg, Greens in Reg, Putts and scambling/up and downs.
Count them - see where you need to improve!

Also read a book by bob rotella! He some good ones!
Remember the game is won and lost in-between the 6 inches of your ears!

Not to argue with Lukey, but it takes far more than just going out and practieing to get better. Plenty of people on here practice and take lessons and never really improve. Not to say that good structured practice will not help you improve.

When it come to practice it's quality over quantity. When I'm having a session with my driver I hit every shot like a real tee shot. Basically go through my complete pre shot routine rather than whack it, bend over to put another on a tee and whack it away again.

It's sounds like you had a good game and put more effort into choosing the correct shot and it worked. From your handicap the place to be aiming for is a 12 handicap. Remember you get 12 bogeys to take. So rather than trying the Michelson shot over a bunker play a normal pitch and put it on the green. Gaurantee a bogey, you may still get a par. But don't chunk it Into the bunker trying to be too clever and walk away with a double or worse.

Below are two of my swings from my most recent lesson
...
(If I can be a bit bold...) I think you've misinterpreted Bob's 'know your own swing' expression!

Not at all, I had said in another post i would load a video of my swing for Bob to lok at it.

Count them - see where you need to improve! Already do this and have done for a few years now.

How?
If I swing 20 degrees left of the target with a clubface square to the swingpath and hit the sweetspot, the ball will still miss 20 degrees left.
Are you choosing not to read my posts properly?

1) if you are hitting out the heel, toe, bottom, top of the clubface you will never hit good consistent shots. You need to strike the ball with god impact conditions and good impact include a square clubface, striking the ball with a wide open or shut face is not good impact.

2)Once you have managed to do that you need to learn how to control the swingpath so that you can create different shot patterns.

Don't know why I bother.
